Actually I agree, just made a “verandah” for my existing coop to try and keep out the rain and it was bigger than that, man those pics on eBay are so deceptive

Hey bluewren I am thinking of this for a night house only, they have free run of a large yard all day and shelter in other locations aswell, at present they only use their coop at night and to lay their eggs

Hey Miaowzen, congrats on your little flock I hope they sort themselves out soon.
Can anyone tell me a good size for a night time coop for 6 large chickens, hubby said I could buy a new one cause I am having trouble keeping the one I have dry and am worried about the heat come summer, I have seen one that is 95cm x 88cm x 100cm high with the nest…[Read more]

Well it finally stopped raining long enough for me to go out and spread some hay about the swamp, the girls loved it ad were straight in there scratching about, I gave them a treat of warm fruit muesli this morning and they wolfed it.
Question about feed if anyone can help, how long do pullets need to be on pullet grower and do you keep them…[Read more]

I checked their night cook and found puddles forming, so I rang hubby and he is getting me some pallets from work so I can remodel them abit and raise the coop off the ground.

Hey everyone, my chicken run is a marsh, OMG mud everywhere, I let the girls out so they could find some where a little less gooey to stand. I was wondering wether to spread the bale of hay I have out in half the yard so they have something to stand on and scratch in than mud, what do you think?
I am not sure how long this rain is going to hang…[Read more]

Hmmmm would also like to know about Gawler, it is an hours drive from me so was thinking of waiting till the weather gets warmer. I am after Orpingtons so thought spring might be better as some of you suggested.
Also can anyone help me understand hens going broody abit better, and putting fertile eggs under them. How old are hens when they start,…[Read more]

Hi everybody, it seems abit quiet in here so I hope someone is around to answer a quick question, I am thinking of adding a few more chooks to my gang of girls and was wondering how many I have room for. My chook yard is 12m x 4m and I sometimes let them out to dig in my veggie patch and to eat some of the weeds, I have an old aviary that I have…[Read more]

Yay I got my first egg today, it’s from the hen that had the chick which I took away from her, she is now happy mixing with my 12 week old pullets and the chick is doing fine, will get a pic soon cause would like you all to have a guess at what it is. I did find out the hen is a bantam of some sort and that leads to a question, is it ok to eat her…[Read more]

Love the set up BV, wish I had that much room. I have a few more questions if any can help me , when you clean out the chook shed out what do you do with the old hay and poo? I have a veggie patch that just has a pumpkin plant and some capsicums I ATM, can I just throw it on there? Also I need to make a roosting perch of the pullets, what size…[Read more]

Well I took the advise and separated the chick from mum yesterday, what a carry on, the silly hen ran all over the chick trying to get away from me and the chick is freaking out whenever I go near it. I went and got 3 more chicks yesterday as well to keep the little one company and omg the difference in the behavior. The hen barely blinked…[Read more]

Thanks for that Ediedioh, she didn’t come straight from the breeder, I got her from the man I get some of me parrots from, she needed a home. The guy I took her too to get her wings clipped told me she was aggressive and not to mix her with the chicks. I had considered taking the chick and raising it myself like I did the others, what do you…[Read more]

Thanks everyone for your replies, BV thanks for the info, I found out this morning about the leg mites  and have treated her already, I let the chicks out in to the big pen today cause they kept trying to get to the grass, they seem to be enjoying themselves. I spoke to the guy that sold me the chicks and he said don’t mix them yet as she…[Read more]
