I ignore the aphids. Eventually the ladybugs take over. The aphids affecta portion of buds, but once over the initial obstacle, they seem to cope really well.
I find roses, albeit susceptible to certain ailments such as aphids and black spot, recover very easily with minimal intervention, and are so resiliant.
And I NEVER water them!!!!

I have three cats too and none of them pose a problem to the chooks. In fact two of the often spend over night in the chook pens, together with roosting, sleeping chookens, at times when rats and mice are a problem.
I love my cats!!!!

Please keep us informed Brymark. Especially once the chicks start hatching.
Just a word of caution though. Be very careful if you are tempted to move her to inspect newly hatched chicks. I think this can cause a big problem with the broody pannicking a bit to retain her clutch and in doing so, step on chicks in the process. So IMO, let her…[Read more]

Hi Brymark! My Australorps are exhibition quality so are quite a bit heavier (and not as good layers) as Laying strain Australorps. I have had trouble with them in the past as broodies. They have all the good intentions and desire, but have crushed eggs, and newly hatched chicks being awkward fat stupid things. After a disasterous first…[Read more]

I did read somewhere about making glycerine soap. (Which is what pears transparent soap is). Apparently it is expensive to make. I have never made soap so can’t advise, but would like to add, incidentally, that glycerine saddle soap is the same!!!!

My girlfriend had them too Nex and the roosters were as you said, nasty little so and sos. She tried a few times with the breed, going back and forth with different males but has resorted once again to her old faithful silver spangled hamburghs.
One comment of hers I thought was really funny was that they hardly laid any eggs, were too small…[Read more]

Oh, I usually do mine on my own, although was lucky to have Humbug along last time, mainly because I had a chest infection and was not feeling as capable, or as energetic as usual. The green grass is very enticing atm. I don’t mind too much. It all ends up as part of the food chain anyway.
