A family of four can produce the equivalent of a 50kg bag of NPK fertilizer from urine alone every year. This urine has a 10:1:4 ratio of nutrients. This shows a higher nitrogen content than many mineral fertilizers and can be expressed in the lower P/N and K/N ratios of urine.
As for the shorter one, you realise there are differences in plant…[Read more]

Is this for aesthetics of a clay pot?
Could you grow Mediterranean herbs in the terracotta, untreated, and use wicking pots for everything else?

That’s funny, Snags. When someone posted the Forestry Tools link on another forum, I made a statement about that watering can. Something like,”$350?! TAKE ALL MY MONEY!”.

You said urine. Urine is a fertiliser.

Lots of water and some fert, good to see they respond well.
Mine got through on the smell of an oily rag and are getting away now, not near your height or girth though.
Definitely start coppicing, it’s the leaf you want. Either food, forage or mulch. Straight stem for propagation.
Perhaps when you lop them, lop them low to give you a good 50cm+…[Read more]

A thread relevant to my interests. I’m in the market for a new shovel.
As for the Felco stuff, where did you read that? I’ve seen old and new Felco 2’s and they don’t seemed to have changed much, if at all. Felco 2 there, perhaps ARS as a substitute.

Put a 10cm high, rounded berm at your property edge leading the water away from your wheel ruts into those grassed areas. Slightly off-contour. Like a speed bump. So the water can’t run in your wheel ruts. Repeat every 10m or so, to slow the water along your entire driveway length.

Well, by staking them from Day 1 Len, they will struggle to stand. I saw in your last photos that you still had them staked, and staked hard, which is an arboricultural no-no.
You are supposed to be coppicing these trees anyway. Every piece of literature states they get leggy. You should cut them off at knee-height (unless your purpose is for…[Read more]

Tough one and I wouldn’t be using a public forum for legal advice. First point, wait for Council’s response and investigation, then seek legal advice or contact your Insurance company.
From what I understand is that everything inside your boundary is your responsibility other than what are deemed Council assets. If your stormwater pipe exits your…[Read more]

Where are the photos, Len? You know, for adding to the Growing thread.
You can use the leaves green in salads, or you can coppice and dry the leaves, process to a powder and add that to dishes. The difference in green vs dry is a percentage increase and decrease in different vitamins/antioxidants.
Green is spicy on its own, but fine in…[Read more]

Len, I’m with everyone else. We need to adapt, or die (metaphorically, and the plants die, not us).
Permanent shade for Summer, wicking beds and/or aquaponics. You have already sussed out the shade, your beds may need to be reconfigured during the Winter months for the next Summer.
I’ve been trialling wicking pots, using polyester batting (which…[Read more]

Once the NBN sorts, you should have improved connection.

Just cut the spikes, or pull them before you brush up against them. It’s a nice looking specimen.
Take a picture of the leaf, I have 2 suggestions already.
A lot of people hedge them into a ball shape, personally i think it makes them look ugly.

Exactly how much quota have they given you, Len?
My parents-in-law moved to Conondale, mobile phone blackspot, Telstra line in house. Telstra wanted to send a technician for a fee to setup a line that was already there, no way to say “No thanks, the line is right here”.

You will need to do some serious filtering of the water through a biological (plant) system so you won’t need to drain, just top-up.
