replied to the topic Dingos attacking livestock in the forum Backyard livestock 10 years, 3 months ago

Dingos are just another breed of dog and a wild dog at that. It does not differentiate between wild or domestic prey, they are all the same to it with the domestic a bit easier to get generally.

It does not matter to your animals if the dog is a pure bred dingo or a mongrel, they are ripped apart the same.

When dogs start hunting your domestic…[Read more]

If you have that “beautiful” sandy Perth soil my WA friends have then it may be worth considering wicking beds for your next step. In the mountains here we have sandy soil and keeping water up to it, especially in summer, is a nightmare with water stress really affecting the plants. That is why we have a mixture of wicking beds and aquaponics. Our…[Read more]

replied to the topic new aquaponics system in the forum Aquaponics 10 years, 3 months ago

If you are going with flood and drain with autosiphons then a pump with an hourly capacity of twice your fish tans will do very well. This will allow for furure expansion and allow water recirculation directly back to the FT to aid aeration of the water.

One thing to think about if you are not going to use a sump is to guard your pump so it…[Read more]

replied to the topic Full sun? Not here in the forum Vegetables 10 years, 4 months ago

I think the ful sun bit is a hang over from our Eurpoean ancestory. Needed in winter but in summer we get much more from gardens under shadecloth.

My productive gardens are all under hoop houses that always have bird net over them and in summer I add shadecloth. Saves water and prevents that beautiful sumburnt quality you always get on your best…[Read more]

replied to the topic Help! My broody is too broody! in the forum Backyard livestock 10 years, 4 months ago

We never make decisions for our chooks. Birds have been successfully raising broods for millions of years without us playing around with them. Just leave her and let her do what she is programmed to do and it will be done really well.

replied to the topic Scraps for Chickens? in the forum Backyard livestock 10 years, 4 months ago

We throw almost everything left over into a bucket and divide it between the chooks and the worms. They are not fussy.

Don’t feed them too many laying pellets if they are not laying a lot, they will get too fat. As their health improves they will come on the lay better and its then you increase their laying pellets. Concentrate on lots of…[Read more]

If you go the rendering way make sure you seal the concrete or it can play havoc with the pH of your system.

Hand reared rooster that has had a couple of wins. Mix that with small kids and you only get one answer – roast rooster.

Hand rearing any livestock you are gong to keep is not a good idea as they don’t have the natural caution of the more wild animals.

Use the pond liner and put some hose that is split lengthwise to protect you from the sharp edge. It also helps hold the liner.

replied to the topic Does anybody know details about this aquaponics system? in the forum Aquaponics 10 years, 4 months ago

Don’t need much room to set up one of those. A few square metre in a sunny spot and you are away. The fishtank can sit under the growth beds and all you need is a frame with a slight slope so the water flows along hte pots.

replied to the topic Does anybody know details about this aquaponics system? in the forum Aquaponics 10 years, 4 months ago

Their system is where they have pots sitting in a large tray which has the fish water running through it. The pots take up whatever water and nutrients they need. Its kinda the same but different to aquaponics, more like a wicking bed with circulating water which is a good idea so you don’t end up with anaerobic patches.
