I would like to join the choko appreciation club, they are sensational fried with garlic (but then what is not)!Just as an aside you need to protect the choko shoots from the chooks, mine hammered them.Cheers Pinetree

Female Geese alone would be less noisy, but not quiet, they still call to each other. I can sometimes hear a neighbors geese and we are on rural blocks.I gess it comes down to, do your neighbors like the sounds geese make?Pinetree

I agree with Snags, soil type and climate and rain fall are the major external factors that govern your returns from the garden, who much you input can affect the return, but the big one is Rain.

I also agree with owlbrudder and le loup, assets that are able to be used to generate food/shelter/surplus will be of benefit in the event of the electronic/paper system falling over.
Super bases its returns on continued growth in the economy, look at what happened to returns during the GFC.
Another factor that will affect super is the up coming…[Read more] -

Just a quick clarification,
I am not supporting any particular views on climate change. It is real but I believe that we are not capable/willing to do any thing about it within the window available. The majority of people are not willing/able to change their lives so as to have limited impact on the planet let alone turn back the clock even a…[Read more]

Big subject, but here goes my two bob;
I am of the opinion that climate change is real. But wether or not we can do anything about it is almost a mute point.Fossil fuels will become too expensive for the majority of working people in the near future. This situation I believe is inevitable because of population growth, increased demand, and…[Read more]

Thanks Bushy, I will give both timetables a go and see what happens, the wildlife will I think determine which timetable works. Any thing green gets hit hard around here in winter.

Have been looking at growing some wheat also, tried some feed wheat, the wombats loved it. So have been preparing a fenced area. Just bought some spelt seed(not supposed to take as much out of the soil, but lower yields?)
Gday Bushy, as you are now the expert(have grown wheat before), a question for you, most info says to plant in Autumn, harvest…[Read more] -

Jinja, I agree that there is no right answer for all, that each will need to play to their strengths. As you say not everyone will have land enough for keeping horse/livestock, labour will become more important in producing food once again, so transport options will not all need to be complicated.
The electric bike option is a good one for…[Read more] -

Agreed, travel imediatly after any crunch will be limited, no point going to built up areas looking for help/supplies, probably be dangerous also. But once things settle a bit, the ability to have limited local travel will have benifits, visiting (mental health), group harvesting/planting (labour will be needed), gathering/fishing/hunting. For…[Read more]

Thanks for the thoughts, can I play devils advocate?
caddie, the bike thing sounds alright to me also for personal transport (ie visiting friends etc), particularly if vehicular trafic decreases, the problem I see is carrying a load, I have seen some of those photos of people carrying all sorts of things in asia, but for me 20km to town with a…[Read more]

Yes Dennis, I hope for newer tech that will do away with much of the manual labour that needs to happen in order to survive, but will I be able to pay for it?

I am steering away from running small engines after the SHTF, as soon as a chiansaw is started everyone within a kilometre now knows you have fuel and or fire wood.
I got hold of an old two handed cross cut saw(just need to convince the kids to learn to use it?)
And Yes Lady B, a person with a good brew should not be short of willing help!
