 Sticking my hand up for the roll call 😛 . I am still popping in, just not always commenting. I had a crazy year last in 2013 with the kids schooling in DE so not as much as I’d like is happening in the gardens other than the cherry tomatoes and rhubarb taking over atm

 Jye. We tried plating acer rubrum ‘lipstick maple’ down our drive way but have very heavy clay acidic soil and even with much tlc to the soil and water they died in our summer heat. We ended up replacing ours with crepe myrtles. Like most things it will depend on summer temps and water availability. Ours just couldn’t cope with 36+ temps…[Read more]

I would also agree with the mulberry. We planted one 2 years ago and have had an abudance of fruit this year and when it has been extremely windy the ladies have loved cleaning up the fallen fruit underneath. It has grown extremely quickly as we composted the grove it’s in with mushroom compost before planting and then we just top it up with the…[Read more]

I’d add it to casseroles. Would probably work well in a slow cooker recipe. Maybe add a stock cube or herbs.

can someone tell me, do valencia’s and navel fruit different times of the year?
I have a feeling they all fruit around the same time Spring-Summer but it might depend on the variety  . I’d just like to actually have my orange…[Read more]

Thanks for letting us have a look around your gardens. It’s great to see where others are up to. We’re also on the NSW Sth Coast backing onto bush and have problems with citrus even growing. I’m persisting but the only one that has fruited consistently in 7 yrs is a Eureka lemon. The others struggle to even grow so I am starting to wonder if…[Read more]

I’m with Bobbs. I have rocket planted and that was my first thought as it’s what the leaves look like before they get larger. Does it get a flower?

I for one would love to see Monsanto and their linked companies banned from Australia. I too though Len think the Aussies are too much in cahoots with the Yanks and fear what we see here is only the beginning. A friend recently said to me sarcasitcally as I commented on some weeds in the pavers around the veg garden ‘oh that’s right, you don’t…[Read more]

I have had similar things happen here. Today I did a ph test on an area where plants keep dying no matter what. In that particular area we have extremely acid soil – to the point that nothing grows there. It’s worth getting a kit and doing a ph test.
Regardless of the soil I would add heaps of nutrient rich material and gypsum (if you have…[Read more]

Capsicum works well in a pot too and in a greenhouse will be more of a perennial than annual.

Pineapples should grow well in a pot although they will take a while to fruit. I buy a fruit with the top on it from the shops and then chop the top of, take off the bottom few leaves and let it dry out for a day or 2. Then stick it in the ground or in your case a pot. As long as it gets warmth it should do just fine. We have just replanted…[Read more]

Thanks Judi. I have planted it in a grove next to my bananas. I figured if they have survived a couple of years where they are and are fruiting this year we may have a chance in that spot. We do have some hessian though which we covered the bananas with when they were young so I’ll probably put it over it as soon as it starts to get cold at…[Read more]

Yep will eat eggs as we have our own chookies. Will probably eat fish occasionally so I guess that’ll be classed as pescetarian not vegetarian but I’d rather the natural source of fish oil as much as possible and not out of a bottle.
We’re still getting through the freezer as I had a huge backlog in there but I’m down to vegetarian prob every…[Read more]

Thanks for that link Bel. I’m finding it hard to find recipes as well beckcur. I had a salad with nuts sprinkled over for lunch today and then got a major case of the munchies late arvo. I think I should have added more protein at lunch
