I’m sorry, I never ended up taking photos of the chicks! I have eight as one died on Friday (I believe my Faverolle chicken attacked it).

It’s been amazing watching my chickens play mum though. First up, I think hatching 10 out of 11 eggs meant she was dedicated to the task. Then once they all hatched, Urd has been an amazing mum!! She always…[Read more]

    Chicken little is so cute!

I got nine! :woohoo: I had ten, but one passed suddenly, wasn’t to be.

Eight of them are australorps, and they were supposed to all be, but two look like little brown chipmunks. I guess welsummers?

Mum is making a mess with their food bowl in teaching them to scratch so the chick feeder sounds like a good idea. I got crumbles and took away the…[Read more]

I shall take the whole lot out of the nest box this morning then and just let them run around the cage with food and water. Have to buy crumbles tomorrow, for now I only have mash so will serve it a bit damp

I am so sorry about the dead chick  🙁

Today my chicken mumma hatched her eggs! I am so excited, I have only ever seen chicks in pictures and they are so cute 🙂

They are all supposed to be Australorp but there is an adorable striped brown one in the mix too. I’m sure I counted at least 6 and mum looks like she is still sitting on eggs.…[Read more]

    Such cuteness!

So sorry to those that have had losses, I hope the surviving chikkies are happy and well.

I wasn’t so confident, but eventually placed 12 eggs under my broody and she is doing very well. She’s not eating or drinking much though so I hope she gets through without any disasters. She’s due in 1.5 weeks.

    The other two…[Read more]

Wow, so much egg sitting going on! This excited, can’t wait to see everyone’s pictures.

We’ve gone from four eggs a day down to 0-1 egg per day. After one of the faverolles died, the other faverolle keeps laying, but the two orphingtons hurry to sit on the faverolle’s one egg and have stopped laying themselves. Each day I kick them out of the…[Read more]

Oh no, I’m sorry you lost some chooks. I’m so glad I haven’t seen a fox yet.

My girls seem to be doing much better, touch wood. It seems the chicken who died was solely responsible for the thin-shelled white eggs I was getting, as I don’t get them anymore. Maybe she was never so healthy from the outset.

Ta, I hope so too. All three of the remaining chickens are now sneezing, so I am glad that today is not as hot as heat plus sneezing must be very stressful for them. I have my fingers crossed that they all recover!!

Thanks. I ended up going straight to the fodder store and bought an antibiotic called Terramycin. It’s going in their water.

Unfortunately the girl who had her beak open and who’s body shook each time she sneezed died from the infection 🙁 First death in my chickens and I’m rather sad. Two of the other three are still coughing and sneezing but…[Read more]

I do hope you get that fox BV 🙁

I’ve been away recently, but need help quick!! I hope someone can help. One of my chickens started sneezing and coughing on the weekend. I couldn’t do anything at the time as my cat was very sick and we had to give him our full attention. I’ve been watching the chicken to see if she got better or worse, well now…[Read more]

It rained heavily the day after my flood lol, but it’s been getting fairly warm. Even had a few tomato seeds sprout, although they were pulled out by blackbirds. Never mind.

The chickens seem fine, the water drained faster than I expected, but tomorrow I’m getting fresh sawdust. I couldn’t today because of the public holiday.

No, mains water, but is still a terrible waste 🙁

I’m a bit worried about the chickens, the ducks don’t mind at all. Luckily the chickens all sleep in a plastic box (they never got used to the idea of roosting for some reason) and the box is dry even though the rest of the coop is wet. It’s a metal cage so no mould luckily.

  • BW, the newsletter is called The Daily Reckoning. It is sent to my email and has some interesting reads although it’s mostly pretty negative and I’m not really into news so I skim over it.

  • BlueWren I turn to my garden too and it saddens me when it’s so dry. All my little seedlings died because a bird was desperately looking under them for worms and dug them up :S I figure that once I have a good gardening system set up where I can produce all my fruit, veg and eggs then I can teach that to my children when I have some and they will…[Read more]

  • Well I am totally exhausted.

After success with my cowl and a very basic necklace I bought some sock yarn and decided to make socks (72 stitch around, 2.75mm needles) for my step-father’s 60th birthday. I started on Saturday and the party is this Sunday.

I have knitted non-stop for six days and my hands and arms are sore and my eyesight is…[Read more]

I don’t think she’s broody yet but she’s laying in the duck nest and sitting on them while she’s at it. She takes her time to read a book and ponder the meaning of life.
