This may sound stupid but aren’t most of those crops supposed to be winter veges?? I thought now was the time to start planting the spring and summer ones. I didn’t know they could be grown now because they get overheated in a few months?? I’m in perth where everything cooks in summer.

I’m putting in seeds of basil and tomatoes now. I can’t…[Read more]

My hydro setup is very small scale because I’m trying to construct it by recyclling and spending as close to zero dollars as possible. Plus I have very limited space, just enough to bring seeds on a bit but eventually they are going to want to get BIG and the weather will be better so I want to stick them out in the ground.

    So far I have…[Read more]

  • replied to the topic Ants in broadbeans 🙁 in the forum Vegetables 9 years, 3 months ago

very sadly my broadbeans have also been invaded by ants 🙁
At first I thought they were putting out aphid eggs for farming like they did with my Basil last season :@
But on closer inspection there are no eggs or aphids
The ants seem to be making little black spots up near the buds. It looks like they are sticking their mandibles in and…[Read more]

  • I’m really looking at the growing light options now.

I actually have a moon planting poster which I plant them by most of the time.

I have tried the covered box outside and have cooked seedlings and rotted them and everything in between. I have a hard time getting the shade to sun to air circulation to heat and cold ratios right. This year I…[Read more]

  • replied to the topic messed up garlic in the forum Vegetables 9 years, 3 months ago

It’s slightly off topic here but everyone is talking about growing garlic and I have been wondering this for a while. I go the big name supermarket, and then the grocer who specialises in local produce but no one sells local garlic. It’s always from China or Mexico or even California ??? Why can’t I find any West Australian or even Australian…[Read more]

Sooooo if i were to plant seven vastly different varieties of Tomato close together all in a row…..

the Bees would come and do their filthy dirty business, :jawdrop:

and I would end up with a wide range of crossed fruits that wouldn’t necessarily be true to their type ??

I was under the impression that any cross pollination…[Read more]

I have planted my first ever broad beans because I also heard that when they are young and fresh they taste not at all like the older bitter ones I told my mum I’d never ever eat and she couldn’t make me!! :p :rip:

But it’s now the last day of July and they’re only about a hand high with no flowers or pods or anything. I hope I didn’t start…[Read more]

Thanks for the reply. Ill wait till mid august to plant the seeds and maybe rig up a shade cloth screen when it gets really hot.

Does anyone know if I build a poly tunnel greenhouse should I plant the garden according to the guides as though I live in the tropics? Assuming I seal it up right and it gets nice and steamy in there. The frames…[Read more]

    Hi
I am a Perthling and a beginner at growing my own food. I have prepared a new garden bed in preparation for tomatoes. It is along a north facing tin fence and has some protection from side winds. So they will get almost all day sun.

I have a question for other Perthlings.. when to plant the actual seeds. I have read that you can start…[Read more]
