Aussies Living Simply

  • Hi Roquen,

Just wondering how it’s going in 2012?

Thinking about homeschooling my 3.5 year old… I only have the 1 child, so I imagine the new baby has created a new challenge!

    Hope to hear more,

    regards

    Kalex

I am feeling really guilty, because I too missed the deadline… have had a manic month… I will post mine this week… sorry swap buddy! I will try and make it worth the wait!

and to make it worse, I received my prezzies!!!!

A HUGE BAG OF BEAUTIFUL SOAPS!!!! and a bottle of GORGEOUS MOISTURISER! I’m so SUPER IMPRESSED and THRILLED!

    Thank you…[Read more]

  • Great Coop! Very palatial – well done to all involved.

I don’t know where you live, but our winters are very wet and chilly and our chooks just have a big nesting box and a completely open coop (except for a roof)… so during winter, they sleep in the box, and in summer they sleep on a perch… when we built it we didn’t know what we…[Read more]

  • thanks everyone… I was wondering whether tea tree oil in water sprayed everywhere might work? (I’ve heard that can work inside the house, on the cats themselves and to wash their bedding in?) any thoughts on that?

  • Hi All,

this is new and exciting for me!

Um… I love cooking (and eating). We (my and hubby and 18 month old son) live in a small “renovators dream” so prefer something useful over decorative as we don’t have alot of space! Prefer bold colours like red.

Also trying to establish a vegie patch. I’m sure I will love whatever it is that someone…[Read more]

  • Hi Guys, thanks so much for all that information – it really has been very helpful. I will tell my friend to read this link!!

He told me this morning that these pumpkins are supposed to be a light grey/green and at the moment they’re quite a dark green… do you think they might get lighter? or do you think he may have just got a different…[Read more]

  • I am watching this post with interest… because I too have some coriander seed i want to save… (darn stuff bolts soooo quickly!)

I tried planting the green seeds to see if they’d grow… they didn’t … but then again, maybe that was because I went on holidays and my house sitter didn’t water them… who knows??

So can anyone answer our…[Read more]

Thanks Gianna! That’s a great tutorial – much appreciated!

I think I can see where I went wrong! I used much higher proportion of milk to oils… even though that’s what the soap calculator told me to do… i guess it’s not a replacement for a recipe 🙂

I read somewhere that the animal fat is what makes a soap harsh to sensitive skin, and oil…[Read more]

okay, 48 hour update… it’s an absolute mess!

How can I describe it… it’s separated into curds and “whey”… but the “whey” looks like watery blood! :rip: Even though the curds are the colour they should be – creamy… very strange… I don’t know where the red has even come from… is it a chemical reaction of some sort? any clues?…[Read more]

  • Hey everyone,

thanks for all your feedback – really helpful!

Kookaburra Dreaming, the reasoning behind pavers I think is so that you can hose them down, or sweep them, and maybe because the chooks have proven to be excellent excavators and if left unchecked my scratch their way to China!

A couple of things I have gotten from all of what you…[Read more]

  • So anyway, 4 or 5 weeks have passed since I made the soap and our shop-bought el-cheapo soap ran out finally, so now we’re using MY soap!

it did shrink a little and get a bit whiter too, just like you said it would AND IT’S GREAT! lathers beautifully and smells lovely… I’m thrilled considering it was such a simple recipe… even hubby likes…[Read more]

  • I saw the show and it definitely didn’t contain pumpkin:rip:… it must have been pumpkin seeds… watch the video on the linke above that Vanessa provided.

    bon appetito!

  • Ooh, I have made it twice with great success both times! The recipe I used was from the Good Taste mag from Safeway… but it’s online – here ’tis… http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/2238/quince+paste

so easy and so much better than anything bought… I poured mine into patty pans in muffin trays and got 17 of them – you can then peel the patty…[Read more]

  • Yes Pasqualina it is in Cairns… that was taken on our honeymoon, I thought the jelly babies were cool!

Sorry tho, haven’t got a clue what to do with powdered milk (apart from making my own paneer:tup:).

    cheers, Kalex

  • I just wanted to tell you that I made Bel’s fruitbars – the recipe from an old copy of Grass roots… because hubby and I are on the liver cleanse diet and are not allowed animal fats or much sugar (normal sugar)…

They were yummy – made heaps and were gobbled up in no-time… but I wouldn’t say they were muesli bars… or even fruit bars……[Read more]

  • I have to add my 2 cents worth (we’ll round that up to 5 cents for ease, shall we?)

My 10 month old had shocking eczema and cradle cap from about 2 months – he loved the bath but screamed when we tried to dress him.

What we have eventually found helped is – QV sensitive bath oil and QV sensitive moisturiser (which sometimes hurt as well, but…[Read more]

  • ah-ha! I see why soap making 101 doesn’t cover superfatting and lye discounts! That is taking it to a whole new level, isn’t it?

I’m sure I will have more questions to ask in due time so thank you for being willing to furnish me with explanations!

    cheers!

  • thank you Debby-Lee and Ma! Your experience is wonderful, it’s very helpful.

But now I have another question – what is superfatting? Oh and one of the soap making websites talks about a “lye discount” and just expects that will make sense to me???? :geek:(Perhaps they’re expecting people who have atleast read a book on soap making to be visiting…[Read more]

  • Is there any reason why you can’t use them earlier than 4 weeks? I did read somewhere that you might burn yourself, but if you’re using them after 2 days, I’m guessing you’ve not found that to be the case?!?!?

Is the curing just to make it go harder? Or does it serve some greater purpose?

I must keep a soap making (and everything else making)…[Read more]
