Ever since I saw this on RC about 18 months ago I’ve wondered how it would go here in Australia. Water will be a real issue, but I’m sure solutions will be found. The UK have had some brilliant experiences with it.
Fabulous stuff – congratulations on starting and all the best of luck for wonderful success!

Add me to the “having hassles” list.
Invalid token? What token? I’ve never used a token and three times this morning the site told me this rather than log me in. Fine, got better things to do and don’t spend much time on this site now anyway. Later, whilst reading posts I hit the return button to find I was logged in, but apparently had an…[Read more]

Where’s Sonya? Paging Sonya, did she follow us to the new forum? I’m not here often enough to know.
Anyway, she’s a beekeeper extraordinaire and could help you.

I grow comfrey as instant mulch and compost activator in my citrus grove and the kikuyu grows straight through, under and around it. Comfrey’s still wonderful though.

You mention sounds and noise a lot. This worries you, little noises worry you. Try taking B vitamins, especially B6. A B complex is not very expensive and will also help with general stress, but the annoying noises thing and my inability to sleep was helped by this. If you can take extra vitamin C to support it in the initial stages even if you…[Read more]

replied to the topic sheep shearing – is it reqd for 5 month old sheep? in the forum Backyard livestock 10 years, 2 months ago
I’m with everyone else – have them shorn (yes “shorn” 😉 ) now and it will save you problems with heat stroke or grass seeds or wool blindness later. Well done on being observant and noticing their change in behaviour and panting etc. Good observation habits may also save you other problems and you’ll be able to nip in the bud things that may end…[Read more]

replied to the topic Feather pecking and Cetrigen in the forum Backyard livestock 10 years, 2 months ago
I have Cetrigen around for the horses and sheep (it also has an insect-repellent property as well as an antiseptic) and I use it on myself occasionally when I get picked on by barbed wire bully.
I’ve never had any problems with it (and nor have the animals) apart from being stained pink and I can’t see how an egg in the final stage of it’s…[Read more]

Someone like Don Richie, interrupts their own day, their own life, to help others where it’s needed and doesn’t make a big deal about their own actions.

replied to the topic Off milk mash in the forum Backyard livestock 10 years, 3 months ago
Is it off or sour? There’s a difference. Sour milk has curdled and tastes nice, but sour. Off milk is bad and caused by different bacteria, tastes dreadful and will make you ill.
Sour milk will do your chickens good. Bad milk will make them sick.

Oh wow I’m so glad they fit – custom knits done “blind” are always a bit of a wiggle. I had to use some magic to make them work long distance so I see it worked 😆
SO has some too and is pretty good with gardening, handyman type work and animals. He’s not so hot on house work but you don’t need the gloves inside so perhaps the magic stops when…[Read more]

You may need to take them to the Strathalbyn abattoir as the Lobethal one is now owned by Muslims. There may be another small abattoir closer to you. I’ll ask my butcher friends 🙂
Also, a chap at work’s brother breeds pigs. When I asked if he’d sell any to me he asked what breed, what age and how many? Our pig project was then put on the back…[Read more]

Simplynatural said it best! 😆
We are forced to keep our chickens in a fox-proof enclosure or they will meet the same fate as all our neighbour’s free range poultry. Our neighbours now have fox – proof enclosures too.
Just think – on the boundaries of your vegetables you can grow chicken edible plants for them and they will never be without…[Read more]

Hello Gordon
We compost our oxalis – in a hot compost mix it dies and adds lots of moisture to the mix.
Wish we had ducks, though.

Sick lambs will be mopey, not energetic and may go off their food. They then get very limp and their head will always be down. They spend a lot of time just laying down.
If a lamb is bouncing about and playing, mouthing grass or hay, (they can’t eat or digest it for a month or so but will mouth it and chew it in preparation for their gut flora…[Read more]

Same sound advice that you would have for any young mammal having milk as above.
Small amounts regularly totalling the daily allowance for the age group they’re in. Watch out, time passes quickly and you will need to increase it soon. They should grow rapidly and seem comfortable most of the time. There are lots of age – feeding amount tables on…[Read more]

When you find one I’ll get their number as well. Good opening for someone with earthmoving gear…
Lots of the contractors around will do swales as you ask, but I’ve never heard of any specialising in them.

When I was little I had a book called “Where does a butterfly go when it rains?”.
I don’t recall the answer but the question was a bit like yours.
They just like you!
(Their numbers increase because they can breed happily in the environment you provide. There are always minute numbers on the boundaries, waiting to do this, but I prefer the…[Read more]
