replied to the topic Chest freezer or vertical freezer? in the forum Home Preserving, Food Storage and Stockpiling 8 years, 5 months ago
We have both. A smaller vertical one upstairs that has general stuff in, and the 500 liter chest in the laundry with lots of bulk stuff in. The secret to a chest freezer is organisation. I have plastic bins that sit on top of each other. And I keep things in the same place so I know what is where.

We don’t eat a lot of meat, but when chicken breasts were $6.99 a kilo here we bought about 8-9 kilos. We also have frozen fruit, flour, nuts and seeds, the usual bread and vegetables, premade bulk dinners, bulk cooked baked goods, lemon juice, frozen bulk peas and beans (legumes and pulses), bulk cooked rice and grains, perishables on a good…[Read more]

I’ve done it off and on. At first I found it rather yuck, but it doesn’t bother me anymore. My main reason was for discolored teeth. It didn’t make them white, but I think it did help a little with making them just a bit nicer looking. I do it mainly when I’m in front of the computer for about 15-20 minutes.

Well we are trying to not rip our hair out, but it’s hard
Everyone wants you to believe their panels beat everyone elses. Thank goodness for places like Whirlpool which is such good reading. We’ve been doing our research.
Got more quotes now. There were 2 good ones using good panels and inverters. Darn…I noticed we wouldn’t be able…[Read more]

I worked in my compost station. Topping up one compartment so it can now sit and mature. And starting the second one. Used saved water from the shower and sink to put on the tomato and silverbeet plants, along with the potted lemon tree, and 1 sole pineapple plant.

I purchased The Lost Seed seeds last year and got excellent germination. This year I went ahead and got Yates as I didn’t want to send away for my seeds. Very poor germination. Sent away for more Lost Seed seeds and got them last week. So I’m using them from now on.

Hubby had a bypass Sept 2009. Doctor wants my husband’s cholesterol down to under 4. Even with 2 cholesterol pills (2 different kinds) it only got down as far as 5.2. He said to start using that plant sterol margarine. It went down to 4.2. Last test it was 4.6. The other week the doctor said to add oat bran and fish oil capsules to his diet.…[Read more]

I want to seal things like:
Rice
Pasta
Dried Beans and Peas (pulses)
Flour
Salt
Sugar
Grains (like barley)I’m trying not to think “overboard”. I am starting off small, and hopefully get 3 months supply of food storage. And then maybe I’ll be experienced enough to move on to a bigger picture of adding and adding.
I was thinking that maybe I am…[Read more]

I tried saving long bean seeds once and didn’t do a good job of it. But I might take the plunge and have a go at seed saving this year. You never know, I might be a natural 😉

I’m in hot north Queensland 130 km north of Townsville. What could I grow that would be suitable besides long beans?

PS thanks for the all the suggestions! Don’t have chooks I’m afraid, but have got a supply of free manure. Hubby had a bypass in September or else the ground would have a nice layer of mulched cane mulch from the Mill. But…[Read more]

Hello. I tried what my friend said that worked for her. The Herron capsules from Coles were just under $19 and the use by date was next year sometime. I have tried soy yoghurt and it came out like the consistency of buttermilk. Last night I tried powdered dairy milk and it didn’t work at all. Just the consistency of normal milk. So for me…[Read more] -

Just a minor encouragement with my garden. I planted a bunch of lettuces in a full sun position and they have come up beautifully.
I wrote to “Ask Lyn” about my silverbeet problems. Sounds like a fungus issue. I also found some other sources on the Net about things I was doing that also may have added to this problem, which was overcrowding with…[Read more]

I use a Diva Cup. Have been using it for about 3 years. Only had 2 cycles early on in the first 6 months that had major leaking issues. I am glad I found it. I got it from Canada, and it was about $30 something dollars. I wouldnt’ trade it in for anything.
I did find about 6 months into using it that I was having trouble getting it to open once…[Read more]

Just want to once again thank everyone for their imput.
I sent away for Lyn’s book and a couple of smaller others from Warm Earth.
I started my gardening book. Wrote in what has been happening so far this year and did a little picture of the layout of the veggie garden, and wrote what I thought were possible reasons for the garden not doing well…[Read more]
