Hello Starryone, I recently built this wood fired water heater with an old hot water system coil (cost me a carton)
We have a really nice gas powered bath room but I wanted to save some money as we have lots of wood. There is nothing like in a tub full of hot/warm water.
I used the old kids (grandkids) cubbyhouse as they have pretty much…[Read more]

A little bit of cut and shut and we had a beaut kitchen.
It was free BUT we had to carry it all down from a fifth floor…[Read more]

Hello Len, Don’t discount completely the made to order kitchens. We are lucky in that our little town has a firm that has all the computer wizbang machinery to make to order a kitchen. We could still assemble and fit ourselves. All we had to do was take in the measurements and a list of what we wanted. I think it cost 7 grand but we got a u shape…[Read more]

replied to the topic should I put a dexter over my jersey for her first calf? in the forum Backyard livestock 10 years ago
Hello Gypsyoak, I’m wondering why ? My limited understanding is the dexter was bred
for people with one acre lots, so unless you have a small lot or small freezer why
not go for a larger animal? Dexters do throw ????head animals and short leg animals
I was told by a dexter breeder.(????= forget name)Our butcher (mobile)charges so much for the…[Read more]

Hello all, what a wild night, my wife and I locked ourselves in a shipping container
I was afraid it might blow off the stumps and not be able to open the door.
Kept cool by laying against the steel walls, but also felt lots of vibrations.
Suprise, suprise in the morning no real structural damage to buildings but trees
big and small broken off or…[Read more] -

Hello mkc2862, We got am mf64 for our block of about 7 hectars and I was fortunate to have a good tractor mechanic friend to assist. Our block is also not flat with some very serious gullys and he insisted I get something with a double clutch because if you are backing up to a drop the slasher can keep going and take you over the edge.
Hope this…[Read more] -

Hello AlternaMa,
Did you check your kids ? My grandson takes delight in opening things and throwing switches.
One visit he switched the egg fridge off, next visit I checked the fridge light after he left, but he still caught me, he had adjusted the thermostat.

Wow, Thanks for the memories, In Mackay we had the horse drawn milk, ice and bread.
The bread man would use the whip if we tried to hitch on the back of his cart.We didn’t get cream that came in small bottles and I bugged my mum for some so she agreed that I could ride my bike (about 12 mile round thip) and get it at the butter factory one…[Read more]

Hello all, I have not tried this either but I remember from my youth that people uses ” water glass ” and I think a concrete additive called non pourite ? but the most interesting was an old chinese system that used lard with some salt in your hands and smeared the egges in this.

Hello alokin, I have an old one that was my fathers from the 1940’S
but damned if I can use it with much effect. Its hard work.
I would suggest you buy a sythe stone which is about 10 to 12 inches long and oval about 3/4″ wide by 1/2″ thick that way your hands will be safer. The old council workers I saw as a kit would sythe a bit then sharpen…[Read more] -

Hello Lady B. I’ve previously had a neighbour (farmer) spray them for me when I called on him. I don’t know what he used but it was a long lasting thing. He has now given me a tin of Taktic which is used every 21 days (in the tick season) so I’ll have make this a regular thing. I’ll also need to check new calves on a regular basis.

Hello All, well its academic now, he died from ticks. The adult cows seemed to be clean and I tried to give the mother and him a bit of space and didn’t realise. I thought thats a sleepy calf but he was just weakening. A local farmer has given me some spray and instruction
so I’ll be a lot more diligent with the next one.

Hello All, thanks. Some pretty good names there. I’m leaning towards
Augustus because then I would remember when it was born, However I think I’ll wait because my other cow “pushy bitch” looks like she might drop a calf soon and what would I call it Augustus 2 ?
