Thanks wiccanchilde, I already take 800mcg of chromium a day. As part of my depression I used to crave sugar and eat so much sweet stuff as a time that I would practically pass out with the sugar low after. Chromium helped me stop this. It seems to work both by stabilising my blood sugar and reducing some of the cravings.
Interestingly ali_celt I…[Read more]

Thanks Misty, got through the danger period and am having a small serve of dark mint chocolate (less than half of what I have been eating) before bed.
I suspect the free foods are what I had for lunch – shaved cucumber, carrot and capsicum salad and avocado. Not bad, but the kids have eaten all my avo’s so I have to get more. Actually, the carrot…[Read more]

ARRRgh – how does anyone stand low carb diets? I started reducing my carbs today and I am craving sugar!!!!! Energy is OK but cravings are bad.
Anyone got any substitutions? I have no real diet plan except to start reducing carbs and replacing them with protein/fat to stabilise my blood sugar.

So a little blurb on how it is performing.
The bed was great to plant seeds in – nice friable soil. The first lot of pak choi and radishes were great. As it matured I found that the middle was unreachable and the lucern that I planted there were competing with weeds, not too much of a problem until weeds spread their seeds to the rest of the…[Read more]

I doubt that anyone has been waiting with baited breath for the next installment, but I’ve finally taken pictures of the Chicken Wicken in action. What happened was that my Linda Woodrow style mandala was too close to a mature tree that was stealing water, so I put in a wicking bed – dug into the dirt 15-20cm, put down foam matting to stop…[Read more]

I will second the using animals – chooks, ducks and whatever else you can get in. You can always eat them when you have finished cleaning (can’t do that with a mower).
What I would not do is pull/poison/rotary hoe/graze and just leave it for a bit while you get around to planting. From experience this always ends up with a new patch of weeds. Do…[Read more]

I’d second the use of ducks/chooks and then do patches with sheet mulching (newspaper/cardboard) as you plant. What I wouldn’t do is just pull weeds and wait for a bit while you get around to planting. From experience that is sure to end up with another patch of weeds. If you pull, immediately plant something – even if it is just sweet potato,…[Read more]

Great harvest! I think the bright green ones are wom bok (chinese cabbage). Serious envy over the snow peas. Hope you had a good stir fry out of all those.

Nice to see the pictures match the ones in my head! The weed is definitely not lucerne. I’d go with sorghum too. Sorghum is a relative of corn. Keep up the good work.

Got any clumping bamboo that survives frost – with the same type of roots, it should compete with grass. Mint might work in a damp area or in summer a circling pumpkin – the only thing I know that encroaches on my lawn! I’d suggest sweet potato, but again the frost.
Try re-reading the Woodrow chapter on edge guilds, it might have a clue. Good luck…[Read more] -
