my first question is why buy a preloved unit when you can get new ones with warranty quite cheaply? my second question is what you are preserving and how much? if you are planning to do more than say 5kg at a time you will want something with a reasonable capacity. The FV plastic electric unit is really quite small and IMHO only suited to…[Read more]

why limit yourself to fowlers vacola these days. there is an ozfarmer preserver out now that is bigger than the fowlers one, not plastic (bonus), big volume (bigger bonus), adjustable temperature gauge (v handy as i think that doing all fruit at the 94 degrees that the fowlers unit operates at is just a bit too hot and i prefer to do my fruit at…[Read more]

I swear by my pressure canner which i got from ozfarmer several months ago. i use their half pint ball mason jars for broth as you can fit quite a few bottles in the canner at once as they have a flat lid not the fowlers clip which makes it tricky to stack! i also sometimes use the little 4oz quilted jars which hold about 125ml of really…[Read more]

personally i do not agree about reusing supermarket jars: why would huge companies like Ball in the USA bother about making specifically designed preserving jars which are heavy duty with tested seals if everyone could just recycle jars bought from the supermarket? have you looked at the quality of the seal on those lids? commercially they may…[Read more]

Hi Neko, if you haunt the Salvos and Red cross etc.. you can get fowlers jars for around 50c each I have gathered over 400 like this. For the cheapest fowlers seals and lids I have found http://www.ozfarmer.com by far the best. I see that they are have presto canners and ball mason jars now as well. If you get stuck let me know and if you are close by I…[Read more]

i also updated my old stove top fowlers unit with the kit on http://www.ozfarmer.com. the postage was very reasonable and quick. i am thinking of getting some mason jars too: what would you recommend as the most practical sizes. i think the fowlers kit bottles are 600ml. 250ml would be a little small wouldn’t it or useful for jams?
any thought on…[Read more]
