I find in the stinking hot Perth summers, it gets very humid underneath the cloth and the plants wilt from the humidity 🙁
Phoenix Seed catalogue has this variety:
“Kakai- European cultivar bred for the hull-less seed which produced a valuable oil. The seed is very nutritious and delicious to eat, especially after roasting. 2-3kg round, golden-yellow fruit with black stripes”
Someone on our PerthGumtree are selling then wooden chook pens, its written that they are not treated, made of ‘fir wood’, so that are animal safe, I wonder if the wood is termite/white ant resistant? Anyone know?
i,ve always wanted to know, if chooks are in a moveable arc, do they mind not ‘roosting’? I thought chooks has to roost? Do they just sleep in the nest box?
Is that a dumb question?
hard to believe Dennis there will ever be an ice age in Perth.
With a record hot summer (something silly like 54 days straight over 30 degrees), and a very crappy no rain winter (Perth drinking water dams at 24% capacity, I think anything below 20% the pumps don’t work.)
So, i’m stocking up on water, cause im going to get thirsty before I get cold…[Read more]
I’ve tried composting in the black cube shape type before, the type that have the 4 little access doors, I found it to be a REALLY slow process. They dry out too quick with all that ventilation.
I now have two ‘Geddy’ bin types, same hight, black and all enclosed with the round lid ( know the types I mean?). These bins sitting in full hot Perth…[Read more]
I have put my name down on an add on PerthGumtree, someone is to hatch some and is taking orders, and she said she will let me know when they are good to go.

How is every ones olives going? Mine black olives have been in brine for 7 days now, changing everyday, I have taken one out to test for bitterness, but all I taste is salt water.
Every recipe I’ve read on the net is different, so I think it’s all a bit of trial and error.

BusyLizzy, from where did you download the copy of the book? Was it a freebie? (I love free stuff)
I find the whole seedsaving and germinating the seeds all too confusing and a little hard, although I am self learning, and trying.
I’m a little confused about the amount of water I’m supposed to be using to first cook the quince (to make the pulp)
I have so far read of:
-1kg + half cup water
-1kg + 600ml water
-steam the quince
-water just to cover
I have 1.5kg of quince.
Thankyou for this thread!
I can’t believe this topic.. What great timing! I got some olives yesterday from work to pickle! I got 1.2kg of the black ones, they are sitting in their first day of brine as we speak. I’m pickling them the same way as Dan has written, this info was also from the WA Olive Association, so it’s gotta work right??
ok, I have 1 rabbit, 1 weiro and a bunch of jap quail….oh and I live in Perth..is that to far for you to come?
