I had a huge plant that grew to the top of my Jak fruit. You need to keep them low as the flowers need hand pollination. I took lots of cuttings and they are now over 1 metre tall. I sell the large ones for $25.00 and smaller for $20.00 It is the cost of postage that is limiting my sales but I also sell local if they can pick them up.

My husband used to ferment rice. You need sticky rice and layer the cooked rice in a glass container with a yeast you can buy in Asian shops, I think it was called Ragi.Put it in a warm place and after 2-3 days it ferments to a sloppy, sweet tasting rice. The longer you leave it, the more liquid you get and then it taste like Saki.I haven’t made…[Read more]

replied to the topic BEES – in the local area in the forum Backyard livestock 8 years, 1 month ago
I have had some very bad fruit settings over the last 6 months. My Jaboticaba usually has huge crops. When they flower I can hear the buzz of the bees inside, not this year. I just read somewhere that Pigeon peas flowers will attract native bees so I threw lots of seeds close to the tree and hope for a better crop next time.

As they are louver panels, they are only 15-17 cm wide. Not much you can use them for. They were from a hot house, my son used to grow carnivorous plants. Even in our sub-tropical climate some of them needed warmth during winter. Of course I would not use crushed glass for a walking path. This area is behind my shade house, about 50-60 cm wide. I…[Read more]

It doesn’t last long with me as I eat it in a few days. Putting in the fridge stops fermentation so should keep a few weeks I think.

It is not a wine, still bananas, they just taste different and there is some liquid. It is an acquired taste, the longer you leave it the stronger the taste.

20 years ago, I just paid $600.00 to remove some palms we planted 20 years ago. Coming from Victoria, we thought palms were so exotic!I think we planted 26 and most have been removed to make place for fruit trees. They were Cuban Royals and were 50 cm diameter. If I lived closer to a big town I could have sold them to a landscape business.

I just picked 2, one was ripening the other was close to it. The black bits around the fruit can irritate your lips and must irritate your bowel too as I get diarrhea. The solution is to wash the fruit and the black bits will float to the top and wash away. I never heard of making jam with them, interesting!

In Holland we always bred rabbit for Christmas dinner. WE had a guy come to our house to kill them. They were so large that one was enough for a meal for our family of 7!!My mum braised it and it was always tender. When I lived in Victoria you could buy rabbits in the butcher shop but I never could cook it the same as my mum.
