  • Awesome job on the oven – love how it looks. Pond is beautiful too. Lookin’ real good at your place.

  • Umm, there was civilisation before there was power….

  • Quite possibly, Bel. I’d love to come but it’s the w’end before my b’day & I’m not sure when we’re doing the family thang yet.

Congratulations on the new babies, Jenoka! So cute. 🙂 They look blue to me. Too greyish to be blacks & splash will come out yellow with darker flecks. I’ve just had my first splash hatch yesterday. 🙂

I’ve missed so much! Lot’s of chookie action everywhere! Bel, how’s that chick? Did you pop her back with her mother hen? How did it go? With weak young chicks, you can dropper feed them some egg yolk mixed with a bit of water – perfect food to help them get stronger.

When to put mama hens & chicks back with their flock – I have a broody…[Read more]

Cute babies everywhere! I’ll be selling a heap at Christmas, both newly hatched chicks & ducklings & 4 week old chicks that will not require heat any more. Ducks are Saxony’s, chooks are blue Australorps, black Australorps, Barnevelders, Welsummers, Light Sussex and mixed colour Pekins. If anyone is interested, there are pics & more info on my…[Read more]

  • Thanks Kristy & Bel. No, still haven’t taken her to the vet. She still can’t weight bear on her leg, poor hen. I’m hoping it will get better on it’s own, so I’ll give her a full week & then see how she is. As she’s one of my best breeding hens I’m hoping like mad she’s okay! I certainly can’t put her back with a rooster if there’s serious…[Read more]

  • I’m thinking my hen’s is a straighforward injury to her leg. Small cage, quiet space for a week or so for her I think.

Hope yours is getting better too.

  • How’s she doing today Kristy? My blue Australorp hen started limping & her foot was curling under her & giving way a bit as she walked the other day. I put her in a cage to rest her leg, thinking she’d just hurt it jumping down from the house. She hasn’t improved & seems to be falling on that side a bit – she can’t put weight on it. Think it’s…[Read more]

Oh, quacky cuteness! Yay! I have set my first duck eggs too. They are due to hatch on 21st December – christmas ducklings 🙂

Ooh, that’s wonderful! The light chick in front is a rare lavender Australorp! She has double blue genes. There’s not many of them! I’m so happy for you! The little one poking it’s head out behind her to the right is a Silver Laced Wyandotte. Post more pics of them if you can & I’ll tell you what they are. The black one is probably a darker…[Read more]

I agree Mudhen. I adore my chooks & always do everything possible to get them better if they’re unwell.

Bel! Squeeeee! I’m so excited for you! Please share pics! I had a hen hatch all 7 of her eggs last night. I don’t think I’ve ever had a 100% hatch before. 😀 They just give me such joy.

Thanks Bobbee. She came good today all on her own. 🙂

  • replied to the topic Chook Chat Part 2 in the forum All things Chicken 7 years ago

It’s possible she injured it jumping from the perch. Perhaps you could put her in a small cage to stop her moving around much & forcing her to rest it. Have you felt her leg to see if you can feel any breaks or anything out of place? I hope it’s a soft tissue injury that will heal well with a bit of time. Let us know how she goes if you take…[Read more]

Sorry to hear your chick died, Melrose. 🙁

I learned it all from lots of internet searching & I found someone in America who does a lot of this & had long email conversations with, sending pics of how Boots was looking at each stage, including video of her walking & going on the advice given in return. I learnt a lot!

    Forgot to mention…[Read more]

From what I can gather (without the backup of scientific proof) it’s because of low humidity during the last part of incubating eggs, not a genetic disorder. Boots was one of the last chicks to hatch & I’d opened the incubator a few times to take out other chicks & eggshells & must have lost too much humidity. 🙁

Two little turkeys hatched so far! The first one is from an egg laid by the injured black turkey but the chick is spending more time on her back than on her feet – she may have a problem. Sigh. But the second chick is from my precious original turkeys! Yeeeeaaah!

I’ve just posted on Melrose’s thread a pictorial story about how I fixed the…[Read more]

Okay, I’ll try to put up a pictorial story for you to follow…

This is Boots a few hours after hatching. She can’t walk, her feet and legs are somewhat crippled.

The sticky tape boots – sticky tape under her feet, gently move her toes into the correct position & then put another piece of sticky tape on top of her feet & stick to the other…[Read more]

My beloved turkeys eggs are due to hatch on Sunday! There are only 5 fertile from the 8 I collected after the fox killed them. I get all anxious like an expectant parent before chicks hatch, but this time I’m super anxious! Just had to share. 😛

They lay eggs over a period of a few days – still one a day, but the eggs don’t start to develop until mama hen is sitting on them, then they all have the same start point, hence them all hatching within 12 hours of each other. By adding the last 3 eggs after she’d already been sitting, they will be developmentally 3 days (or however many days it…[Read more]
