I feel your pain, before I moved to the this place to build the house I organised the soil tester to come, I was away and when I rang to confirm they had done the test they said they could not get across the crossing in their awd commodore ute as the awd was not working so they went away. Any 2WD car could get across then.
I moved here living in…[Read more]

You do have a problem, another reminder for people that this rural property ownership has a downside.
We had a similar situation with the creek and access to our place but have managed to get the council to fix it as they have an easement over our property the need to access.
I am up near Tully so the high rainfall is familiar to me and I have…[Read more]

Does it have power and sewage?
If so I think you could just move in.
If you ask council they may say no, once you are in they wont kick you out.

Does anybody have any pointers or information about Wind power? Anybody using Wind power right now?
We have a smallish solar system, which is only just enough for us (family of 4). It is a 2.1KW system made up of 12x 1770amp Sonnenshein batteries, Outback 3kw inverter, Outback MX60 controller and 12 BP 185w panels and a 9KVA Honda generator as…

replied to the topic Is there anything you can do if your house lifespan is up? in the forum Building and Construction 8 years, 11 months ago
So you have established a few things, you like where you are and dont have the finances to move any how.
You can consider a reno or a new house on the block, the reno could be done over a long time without finance?, a new house would be easier but involve major finance.
No council will approve a septic within 50m of a creek, but they should…[Read more]

consider your finances first, can you afford to sell and repurchase, could you afford to rebuild should it be allowed, consider if you had to borrow to rebuild or renovate.
Sounds like you need to put some serious thought into the future of your housing so you dont end up in a few years with no house to live in, or dreading the next mouldy…[Read more]

have a look at some footage from after cyclone Yasi and think about how much of the stuff in the piles of debris is asbestos sheet, heaps of it!!
I watched 2 lads dismantle a house after yasi, they just had overalls on and masks, threw it all in a big pile and then and excavator loaded into a truck, on a main road with BSA and council etc going…[Read more]

i think you are worrying to much, the amount of asbestos in the ground from bits of sheet falling off would not even be worth a second thought,
get rid of it and move on, but that would be me,
cheers

Like Metu this is a “if it were me’response.
its only dangerous when cut, drilled etc when the dust and fibres become airborne.
Pulling it down is simple enough, pair of disposable overalls with hood and dust mask. hose it to stop dust, pull it off and wrap in plastic, thats basically what you would pay for.
Then you just need to work out what…[Read more]

Google “ridge cap vent” plenty of brands etc
A company in cairns makes cyclone rated ones, I think??? you are looking in the ballpark of $300 for one 1500 long for those ones, but thats fuzzy memory stuff

farming is not easy,
After looking at options for my spare 20 acres I decided in any farming you need to either be serious or not bother.
We like where we are no close neighbors etc but you still need to maintain the property, be aware that it is costly.

replied to the topic Dishwasher & gravity feed water supply in the forum Building and Construction 9 years, 2 months ago
your pressure and volume of water from 5.5 meters of head is not much, my tank for gravity feed is a 2500l tank 20 meters up the hill with 1-1/2 pipe feeding the house. This gives me about 35 psi, this would probably be considered a minimum standard of you are talking mains pressure.
I dont have a dishwasher and dont know how different ones…[Read more]

replied to the topic Need a solar setup? in the forum For Sale 9 years, 2 months ago
As this is a forum for discussion, not a for sale site, I would think you would be prepared to put that information up so people with knowledge on solar could give their opinion on the set up.
from the info you have supplied there is no way to tell if it is a balanced system, worth the money you want or what people can expect from a system that size.

replied to the topic Stand Alone Solar! Where does the Power Go? in the forum Sustainable Energy & Energy Conservation 9 years, 3 months ago
You need to ensure you identify all your load requirements and size your panels and batteries to those requirements, and you will almost always need a generator for top up when needed. if you dont work it out properly you will destroy a lot of battereis.
A fridge or freezer is not what I would consider suitable for excess power, they run 24/7,i…[Read more]

When the panel is disconnected there is no circuit so no power is being generated.
you should not disconnect panels when they are producing power, they will arc,
Can i ask why if you have grid power you are considering an off grid system?

he power doesn’t go anywhere, because the inverter is generally smart enough to know when batteries are full and turns the collecting off. The panels are charged, with heat/power but it stay there until the inverter lets it go to the batteries.
Inverter turn dc power into ac power,
Regulators control battery charging
