Another thing that can promote diabetes is consuming a high ratio of omega-6 fatty acids compared to omega-3 fatty acids in the diet. Avoid foods such as vegetable oils and most nuts and seeds as they contain excessively high levels of omega-6 compared to omega-3. Flax seeds and walnuts are better choices than most other types of nuts and seeds.

My mom was diagnosed with insulin resistance (Pre-diabetes) last year. Since then we did a lot of research and completely changed our diet. Thanks to the changes, she is finally losing weight, and her health is improving. Here is what worked for us:
*Completely eliminate sugar and high GI foods (such as bread, pasta, and potatoes) from the diet.…[Read more]

When I was little, my grandma had really bad asthma. She had asthma attacks every day and was always using her inhaler.
After my mom read somewhere that milk could be beneficial for respiratory problems, my grandma decided to try it. She drank raw milk from pasture-fed goats every day, and after a year her asthma was completely gone. The raw…[Read more]

Bek, good for you for wanting to start up a herd share — I wish more people would do something similar. At the moment, it’s easier to get harmful substances like alcohol than it is to get raw milk in Australia.

I was hoping to get a cow that was already pregnant or that had given birth recently, but we’ll see.

The more I’ve been reading on Highland cattle, the more I have my heart set on getting a Highland cow for milking. I have heard of several people successfully milking Highland cows, but some cows let down milk only for their calves, so I guess that is something to look out for before I buy.
This will be my first cow (I hope to buy one within the…[Read more]

casalenta,
If I remember right, some of the evidence Woodford cited was experimental evidence (conducted on animals) and not just looking at correlations. Obviously, there is still controversy, and the scientific community is not in agreement on the issue of A1 vs. A2 milk.
Personally, until there is consensus, I would prefer to be on the safe…[Read more]

Unfortunately that tends to be a common experience; people have unexplained health problems when the underlying cause is often a problem with diet or environmental toxins.

Yes, goat milk really is the best. It’s easier to digest than bovine milk, mainly because of smaller fat globule size.

Thanks for the link, Andre. I think that the A1/A2 milk discussion is quite different from blood type diets or anything else like that. I first read about the problems with A1 milk in a book called “Devil in the Milk: Illness, Health and the Politics of A1 and A2 Milk” by Keith Woodford. It is actually a very well researched book; the author cites…[Read more]

Yes, I think getting the animals tested would be the safest thing to do. Do you know where you would normally go to get that kind of test done?

There must surely be dogs and cats all over Australia who need raw milk! 🙂
There’s obviously demand (and probably good money in it, too) — for the sake of our pets’ health, lets hope the supply follows.

That’s a great idea Muddyfeet. More people should do something similar; after all, if no money is changing hands, then no milk is actually being “sold”.
It’s sad that we have resort to finding loopholes in the law to obtain healthy food for ourselves and our families, but it’s a good thing there are still ways to get raw dairy.

Nice to have you join, Anja.
There are so many edible plants around us — it’s just that most people don’t know which ones are useful and which ones aren’t. That’s why I started the group. Wild edibles are so much fresher and healthier than anything you can buy in a supermarket and are much better for the environment (e.g. no need to transport…[Read more]

Thanks for the link, Steve.
I also wanted to mention that the group is not just for foragers. It’s also for people who have (or want to start) bush food gardens or want to grow some wild species of fruit, for example. (Wild food tends to be much higher in vitamins and minerals than conventional produce).

Does anyone know where I can buy raw milk, butter, etc. from pasture-fed animals in Tasmania? (I live near Launceston).
I’d prefer goat or sheep milk, but cow’s milk will be fine too so long as it’s A2 milk (I can’t have any with A1 casein in it).

I do hope the government legalizes raw dairy. In the meantime, here’s something you may find interesting (I posted it on a different thread, but it’s worth posting again) — it is legal in Australia to sell raw, unpasteurized “bath milk” or other items like “body butter” or “face cream”. It’s also legal to “share-own” a cow and drink the raw milk.…[Read more]

I love the Gourmet Farmer! By the way, remember how he said that it’s illegal to sell raw, unpasteurized milk for consumption in Australia? Well, it turns out that it is legal to sell raw, unpasteurized “bath milk” or other items like “body butter” or “face cream”. It’s also legal to “share own” cows from which people can drink raw milk (See:…[Read more]
