In my experience BlueWren, I have never experienced exploding eggs, either in the broody’s nest or the incubator.
I also never interfere with the mother hens as they instinctually know what is best and how to go about it. Trouble starts with human interference.
Just make sure they have access to food and water and are in a warm safe environment and then watch as nature takes its course.
