Sorry for my naivety, but I am looking at a site in Brisbane that is selling Black Australorps (Utility) and wondered what the “Utility” part means.
think they are both meat and egg breed, but could be wrong,
that could be what utility means
but – could be wrong lol
A utility bird is a production bird, usually both egg and meat bird. They also tend to lay more eggs a year than other purebreed birds.
and I was right
do I get a prize
Uhh sure, wanna do my exam tomorrow? 😉

  no thanks – good luck though 🙂
Thank you all. I learnt something today 🙂
So another dumb question, if I am counting on buying Australorps for their renowned quiet nature, does that mean a “utility” may not have that quality?
Referring to your link.It says the “utility” Australorps have been crossed with other breeds to improve egg production ,because breeding the original Australorps for show reduced their egg laying ability.Whereas on the same site it says the purebred Australorps are like the Australorps of 30 years ago, known for their egg laying.
So the Utility birds are a cross, but the site doesn’t say with what other breed/s.So I suppose they may lay more eggs for a shorter time, and cark it after a couple of years like the ISABrowns tend to do?
BTW the site uses the same pic for Utility and Purebred!
So if you favour a quiet bird perhaps you need pure breds? Who knows what noisy birds the Utilities may take after!!
Thanks BlueWren, I will make sure I am getting what I am chasing when I am ready to purchase. Very good point.
Here, the cross is wtih a Rhode Island Red 🙂
So where does one get a pure bred Australorp? I have looked at Backyard poultry and most of the links are out of date or I get no response?
Any ideas anyone?
Have you tried the backyard poultry noticeboard?
No, but I will…….. THANKS
The folk at your link sell them.I think you are both in Brisbane?
Just checked.Looks as though they don’t have any pure bred Australorps at present. They have younger ones, and the utility Australorps.
