Hey everyone, I’m interested in looking at a straw bale house. Does anyone here have one and lives in the mid north region of south Australia. I’m aware that there are a few around.
I’ve always wanted one myself Russ. Our long term goal is to build a straw bale B & B on our property. The series ‘Grand Designs’ features some very inspiring eco-houses, including some straw bale ones. Have you watched this series? Below is a link for one particular straw bale house although I’m sure they’ve featured others. Good luck finding one in SA – I’m sure they’re around. Let us know how you go.
Food Forest, at Hiller (near Gawler), has a straw bale extension on the main (1800s stone) house. They also have a straw bale studio out amongst the carobs that was build at one of their workshops. I think the bunk house is also straw bale.
Annemarie and Graham Brookman (owners of Food Forest) are two of the best people in SA to speak to about straw bale. Get in touch with them.
Ok will do. I’m also lucky as a local from Jamestown is building one. I’m going to see if he can teach me a thing or two. This same fella told me there are 6 bale houses in the mid north. Ones in the bundaleer forest… Which is paradise on earth!
How did you go? I went to a talk on strawbale houses and afterwards I was sold. I would love to build one to live in!
This is the guy who did the presentation – http://www.houseofbales.com.au/
He may be able to point you in the right direction to see one.
ive seen three now, very impressed. I’ve seen one where Lance was the builder. Definately going with him.
I went into one on a 42 degree day. They only had 1 fan going and it was very pleasant inside.
Hoping to go to a food forest straw bale course in june this year.
