I’ve brewed up a big pot of weed tea (ie. weeds chucked into a container of water and left to rot) and it stinks to high heaven. I’m sure that means it’s full of wonderful garden goodies etc., and I can handle the smell myself, but I’m a bit concerned our neighbours will get grumpy about the stench from the vegie patch. Any thoughts on ways to reduce the smell when I put it on the garden? It’s ok while it’s in its pot, it’s just once I take it out to use it.
Dunno if there’s a solution really.

Turn it into Super Garden Tea..
for 20 lt of liquid all a good slurp* of molasses and aerate for a couple of days.. all going well the smell should go ** and you will have a top notch tea.
* one good slurp is about 2-3 TBS
**if not add a little more molasesDecember 17, 2009 at 5:50 am #447739porgeyMember
Dilute it a bit, dig it in and cover with mulch. You will soon find that the smell subsides as it washes into the soil. Hope the vegies love it, cheers porgey.December 17, 2009 at 5:58 am #447740Ave a goMember
If it stinks it means that it has gone anaerobic and will possibly do more harm than good….
aerate for a couple of days
I second this :tup:December 17, 2009 at 10:33 am #447741AnjaMember
What ever you do, don’t let it touch your skin! You will nerver get the smell out!!
Tis good stuff, smelly or not.December 18, 2009 at 4:04 am #447742disquinaMember
Hmm, great advice. I’ll put in molasses and aerate, then cover it up for good measure!May 27, 2010 at 7:24 am #447743ZandyMember
If it stinks it has not have enough air and has gone anerobic and can be toxic. If you cant airate it you may need to throw it out. I leant about awful stinky compost tea the hard way!!! It really is no good for the plants.May 27, 2010 at 8:44 am #447744BobbeeMember
Well I have a problem with this stinky homemade weed tea. I make liquid manure from comfrey, another from borage and another from just green weeds.
They all stink. I was told the smellier the better. And my veg love it.
So I agree with Tamandco that it is good, “smelly or not”. Also agree with Tammie about keeping it off your skin.
My SIL has used home made stinky liquid manure for years and grows the most spectacular veg. Her veg garden leaves mine for dead, as the saying goes.
I have read the literature that says the liquid manure shouldn’t smell but I must go with what works for me and we aren’t dead yet and neither are the veg.
I really don’t understand…………………….:shrug::shrug::shrug:

I’m bringing this topic back to the surface.
Some time ago I placed nettles, dock, wild turnip and other delights into a rubbish bin to fill with water for a month. I made the mistake of covering it… now uncovered and it’s horrid!! Especially in this warm weather we’re having.
I doubt I’ll be able to aerate it… as the area is pretty far away from power supply, I could get a solar powered aerator… but I’ve just spend a little bit too much on the garden just lately.. so the aerator might just have to wait.
This is really really gross… but the flies are swarming around the bin… and laying maggots on anything that floats on the water *shudders*.
So what do I do with this… how should I dispose of it? Preferably all at once so that I only have to smell worse than the dogs once.
Options… feed to the compost… but then the water will probably get into the chook pen which is near by and downhill. I have access to molassus… but the advice to add molassus might be null and void since I cannot aerate it.
I think I’ve learnt that weed tea until I get an aerator is a no no!! :sick:November 23, 2010 at 11:10 am #447746dianneParticipant
put it on everything and then give a small water over the top. your plants will LOVE it and the watering will wash it off the top of mulch ect just enough that the smell will go away. I did my winter tomatoes with weed tea and they took off, loved it, best plants Ive had yet.November 23, 2010 at 11:36 am #447747FozzieMember
Well its meant to be raining again this weekend, perhaps I can put it all out this weekend while its raining.
With a bit of luck all the stink will wash down with it.
No more weed teas for me!! Next batch will be worm wee tea as I now have a worm farm 🙂
