Saw this in the local Messenger and thought others may be interested:
‘Rare Fruit Society of SA Annual Grafting Day at Elizabeth Grove Uniting Church, corner of Fairfield and Harvey Road, Elizabeth Grove, on Saturday, July 23, from 10am to 1pm. Learn to graft your own fruit trees or have some grafted for you. Inquiries: 82549194.’
I’m thinking about going along myself, but will have to see how I go.
July 19, 2011 at 6:44 pm #501704I’m hoping to go to the one at Moana on on July 24th, It just depends on the DH and him working on call…
July 19, 2011 at 7:13 pm #501705Iduna I would be interested in the Moana one, which is much closer to me. Do you have to be a member or anything? Is there a cost?
Kristy
July 19, 2011 at 7:13 pm #501706Wow just noticed that it is this Sunday, not sure I will have time this weekend.
July 19, 2011 at 7:24 pm #501707Sunday 24th July 10.00am – 1pm at the Moana Pioneer Hall, Nashwauk Cresent, Moana.
It’s free to everyone who turns up, the only costs are for items you want to buy like the bud wood and rootstock. No I’m not a member but I have been looking into it.
If DH is busy on call I can’t go myself as I don’t drive.
July 19, 2011 at 7:38 pm #501708Where are you located Iduna?
July 19, 2011 at 8:09 pm #501709I’d planned to go to this one at Eliz but our finances mean that I will have to give it a miss, will be watching for the next one tho. I’m going to join too when we get a bit of spare cash.
July 19, 2011 at 8:19 pm #501710I’m at Reynella. I have been waiting for this meeting from about march…. I have been counting the weeks….
July 20, 2011 at 4:23 am #501711Are they doing any other locations? We’re up in the hills.
July 20, 2011 at 1:02 pm #501712The only other one was on the 19th at Burnside.
July 31, 2011 at 5:51 pm #501713I went to the main event on the Tuesday night at Burnside. I’ve been a member for a few years. It’s a great way to collect heritage fruit varieties at a cheap price.
I picked up a heap of varieties of stonefruit and cherry this year, I ordered cherry and plum rootstocks from Maple Grove Nursery, in Tas. Unfortunately I couldn’t get peach rootstocks, so all the scions of peach, nectarine and almond that I bought will have to live for a year on established trees I have.
August 2, 2011 at 2:50 am #501714There is another one happening this Saturday at the Adelaide Hills Community Garden at 3:30pm behind the Uniting Church, Verdun. Kristy, I thought perhaps you’d be able to make this one as it’s much closer. I’ll be there for sure.
August 2, 2011 at 1:33 pm #501715Thanks BV that sounds fantastic! I would love to come. Just a few questions to prepare me LOL as never been before.
Do I need to bring anything?
Will I learn how to do the grafting?
How much am I looking at spending roughly?
Do they sell the rootstock as well?
Sorry if any of these questions are stupid, but I have no idea about grafting, but very excited to learn!

Can’t answer all your questions Kristy, but when I rang the guy about the one at Elizabeth, he said that for the first 1/2 hour – 45 mins there would be a demonstration on grafting. After that, they would be selling rootstock & grafting scions so that you could do some grafting whilst there with some assistance if required. No idea re cost/if you need to bring anything though.
August 3, 2011 at 3:00 pm #501717Thanks Bel, hopefully I will be able to report back on costs etc after Saturday afternoon. Unless anyone else can help? I’m really looking forward to it!
