I learnt two interesting facts at a local market today.
In Tasmania all homemade food manufactured for sale must now be fully labeled with the contents and nutritional values of the food. Also as from next year all eggs offered for sale MUST be in new cartons and no eggs are to be offered for sale by stall or market holders. That means all those who now have side of the road egg sale points and those who sell eggs in markets will no longer be able to do so.
Apparently one lady who made jams and pickles for sale at the local market received a written warning from the local Council and still did not label her jams with the nutritional value and was fined $950 by the courts.
Who said only in America (and New Zealand); look out Aussies here they come!December 8, 2011 at 7:40 pm #515943BlueWrenMember
Actually all those egg selling laws etc have been in place in QLD , and probably elsewhere, for ages, so Tassie is just catching up. 🙁 🙁December 8, 2011 at 7:51 pm #515944mauziMember
just trying, that is a pain and of course really silly. My guess it most people will still sell, just underground. Unfortunately BlueWren they are catching up. The fact that people have been selling eggs for eons and sharing with neighbours and friends seems to be forgotten. I would like to see the stats to show that there is a real danger. Bet I would be likely to be run over by a car, have a reaction to “approved medicines”…. the list is endless.December 8, 2011 at 7:58 pm #515945BlueWrenMember
True mauzi , but the trouble nowadays is if you sell a cracked egg and someone’s child dies you are really in strife………December 8, 2011 at 8:06 pm #515946mauziMember
Yes I know, real strife. The trouble is that the whole world is running on fear… the what if’s and is paralysed. Don’t know what the answer is but it is a really sad state of affairs.
I guess “pickled eggs” is out of the question then just trying 😉December 8, 2011 at 9:28 pm #515947
Made a batch of pickled eggs once, I thought they weren’t half bad.
If you were to give a bottle as a gift it’ll be the gift that’s keeps on giving…..all night long!!!!
I think you so correct mauzi. The world is so scared of the what if’s; why don’t we just stay home and have everything home delivered because what if we have an accident on the way to the shops.
Forgot to add; no using those recycled bottles for your for sale homemade stuff either people, they must be new ones.December 8, 2011 at 9:37 pm #515948HummerKeymaster

Mauzi yes, the government or whom ever, are trying to instill ‘fear’ & ‘control’… we just need to get cleverer, lol.. and no who to barter & swap n’ trade with on the quiet 😉December 9, 2011 at 11:31 am #515949busylizzieParticipant

Seems Tassie is a little late with this one, (or maybe just your council) all states of Oz and Nz have had this in place for quite a while, this is the site I use to do up my templates for my labels for jams ect, pain in the bum, but people do have a right to know what is in the food they are eating, and some people do look at the labels http://www.foodstandards.gov.au
Same here with the eggs, people will still do it, under the table, stupid stupid food laws.
Oh and yes new food jars/bottles as well which all adds to the cost of the product :pinch:December 9, 2011 at 3:34 pm #515950froot_loopzMember
I think its because there appears to be a lot more people intolerant or allergic to certain foods.December 9, 2011 at 4:14 pm #515951
I can’t help but wonder if the increase in food allergies and intolerances is directly related to the increase in food processing and additives we are forced to eat if we choose ( or are forced ) to buy from “controlled” supermarkets.
I don’t know what I’d put on the labels of my eggs and home grown fruit and veggies other than contains no added colours, flavours or preservatives. Product of Tasmania.
Apparently food imported from China via New Zealand and grown using untreated human waste as fertilizer, using DDT as pesticide and stored/shipped for weeks in cold storage is better and healthier for you than anything I can grow.December 9, 2011 at 4:50 pm #515952purplehatMember

My husband and I are intolerant to quite a few foods. We always ASK what’s in something before we buy it (if it doesn’t have a label). I can’t believe that others in our situation would be stupid enough to randomly buy things without at least asking about it’s ingredients first.
If in doubt, we don’t. Obvious.
I think it’s just another way of controlling and limiting cottage industry. Don’t blame the consumer! It’s just more red tape bullshit taking power away from the people. grr.December 9, 2011 at 5:07 pm #515953HummerKeymaster

I tend to agree with the consumption of overly processed food with additives causing intolerances to a degree.. but we ALL still have a choice of what we put in our mouths.December 9, 2011 at 7:16 pm #515954Starting OverMember
Have a look at “Food Inc” …. if you want to scared out of your wits… give me a cottage industry anytime…December 10, 2011 at 11:46 am #515955RobyneMember
Does that include the big fresh food company that takes HB eggs outof date and puts them into fresh eggs boxes   Been doing it for years. The eggs you buy could be over 3-6 months old and thats just in store,
I don’t know how old they are when they come into the store.??????December 10, 2011 at 11:59 am #515956mumof6Member
I just aded to the new NZ food bill that we already have this bill spread across australian law this egg and pickle law has been inforce in my state and local goverment area for some time every time i give someone eggs from my chooks i am breaking the law3 as it states (I have looked into it as was considering selling blue eggs and ham muffins at the local market as a school fundraiser calling them green eggs and ham) sale and/or Distubution you will find that and/or right through the act as it is placed to make a trail of food distrubition so contaminated food can be traced back to sorce.
