    The following is from te website. Really annoyed to read this and I bet the goverment will do nothing about it. The should ban any product that is not what it says it is or has harmful ingrediants in it. Might send an email to the company that makes the rice bran oil that I use a lot. Make sure it really is rice bran oil.

    IT SEEMS that oils ain’t oils – even if the label says so.

    Imported olive oils being marketed as extra virgin – the purest and healthiest form of olive oil – have been tested to show they are actually made up of cheaper oils like sunflower or canola.

    There are even oils shipped from Europe and Asia and sold as cooking oil which contain refined lamp oil.

    Australian Olive Association (AOA) has also highlighted that olive oil labelled as “light” is misleading.

    Association SA president Richard Whiting said the olive oil currently in supermarkets was deceiving customers.

    “Imported product is not what it says on the label,” he said.

    “Also people think oil labelled as ‘light’ means it is healthier, when it is actually only light on the good stuff; antioxidants and flavonoid polyphenols. I don’t know what else is a bigger con.”

    He said it put pressure on honest Australian growers to compete, because the price of oil had more than halved in the past decade.

    “There are shipments from overseas of extra virgin olive oil which are half the price because they are made up of other oils.

    “It’s really hard because if you know your competition is cheating, what can you do?”

    The AOA recently analysed 30 olive oils to test purity based on a new Australian standard which came into effect in July last year.

    Extra virgin olive oil must be free of smell and taste defects, with a free fatty acid level of less than 0.8 per cent.

    Of 22 extra virgin varieties, seven out of seven imported varieties failed to comply due to rancidity, mildew or incorrect labelling.

    But 75 per cent of Australian made oils complied with the standard.

    Mr Whiting owns a 400ha olive grove at Cudgee in the state’s South-East and part-owns a processing plant.

    He said his larger grove will help him survive the low oil prices but some growers would not pick this year, while others would destroy their groves. Bovalina Olive Oil Group director Anthony Papalia owns a grove in Penfield Gardens and said he was considering not picking his olives at harvest time, in early autumn.

    “I’ve spoken to a few growers and there are plenty who are not going to harvest. All the growers are in the same sort of situation,” he said. “Very few products from overseas meet the (Australian) standard and supermarkets are not supporting us because they are not worried about consumer awareness and education.”

    A Coles spokesman said the standard was voluntary and would take time to implement. “We will phase in this change over time as we need to work through existing stock and product labelling,” he said.

    “Brand owners are responsible for these products, as long as they meet Australian labelling and food safety requirements.

    “Coles will withdraw any products that do not meet labelling laws or pose a safety risk to customers.”

    Woolworths said its olive oil would comply with the standard by the middle of the year.


    thats a worry… I guess i always assume that imported products were inspected before being stocked in Australia…

    I knew there was a reason I insist on Australian olive oil! :blink:

    Even so, I’d always assumed that oil from Italy and Spain would be ‘reputable’ – and as crystal said, that imports would have been subject to more scrutiny.


    Why do only 75% of Oz oils meet the standard? What happens to them/their producers? How do we know which are the crook 25%?

    I really,really don’t want “buying Australian” to get complicated! 🙁 🙁

    It annoys me that noone does anything and it slips through the blanket yet again and people keep getting il,l from who knows what and when.


    Heaps of olive oil produced locally here – but how do I know it reaches the standard? Who’s going to tell me?


    BW, Taste I expect and another good reason to get to know our producers and personalise our foods that we buy.

    DH often says to me that many olive oils do not have the correct taste and that they are mixed, so thanks Bare Foot Farmer for the link. Some taste of chemicals, others just do not have that nutty sort of taste that good olive oil has.
