How long do chickens live for? My silky Rooster Redmond must be around 11 years old now and he is getting doddery. The poor old bloke is blind in one eye and stays away from his hens now as they peck him. He is clearly absent-minded & a bit deaf. I can sneak up on him and pick him up without him realising that I’m going to do it. He is a dear thing and still very handsome. Look at my Avatar.
He is lovely! I have no idea how long they live I’m sorry….
ive heard of a 16 year old rooster – plymouth rock cross-
all the books say about 10-12 years of age so sounds like he is doing very well for a chook.
most chhoks don’t meet a natural end but tend to get culled at before 6 when there fertility drops – if not earlier.
Redmond sounds like he has good genes and hopefully he has benn able to pass them on before the hens sent him out to pasture 😀
