We ahve australorps and they can be a bit noisy after they lay though sometimes it seems to be the rooster making the most noise.
We have bought from QLD feather brokers before and they have great quality stock. The citychicks site looks interesting but if they are asking $25 for a day old barnevelder……..well it pretty expensive for a day old irrespective of breed.
Another good site is http://www.famrstock.com.au. Anyone can advertise there and a lot of Brisbane backyard breeders advertise their stuff there. Good bargains can be found.
Hi… know this is old but thought I should issue a warning anyway. Be VERRY careful when purchasing from the above quoted company… QLD Featherbrokers, also use the name Feathertek, N&M Poultry Transporters and a host of others.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE part with your money (even for special “orders” ) before receiving your poultry/goods!!! I know… as I have been caught for several hundred dollars and there are dozens and dozens of others who have been caught as well. For more info do your homework, try a forum called Backyard Poultry (Info Centre).
You will also find it is a fantastic forum for sourcing anything poultry or any poultry related queries.
I secound deni-dog, although it’s small loss for us, just the price of two chooks, a couple of weeks of stress with a crowing cockeral and a new bag of 5kg chick starter I can’t use.
Two out of three sexed chicks we purchased from them turned out to be cockerals. I understand there’s no 100%, and if they can’t do anything about it, they should have said so instead of telling us they will come pick up the cockerals and replace them with chicks and never turn up! Twice.. My parents stayed at home all day waiting for them. They’ve seem to have disappeared not answering any telephone calls or emails.
i’m with Deni and Yuffie – my recomendation would be to avoid Neil Christie or any business associated with him- he is currently appears to be n a lot of Hot water with vairous people in the pulttry world.
my own personal dealing with him have been much less than satisfactory.:@
It’s quite a few years on, but I ended up going with Australorps. It is week 3 / 4 and they are still very quiet.
While I have to admit, they are not at the laying stage yet, I am impressed with their demeanor so far.
I will post more as they progress.
