Mould growing on seed tray?

Two nights ago I sowed some seeds into my tray cell doover. I normally place the tray in a shallow window tray saucer thing so that they can “wick” the water from the bottom. I noticed tonight the top of the tray is completely fuzzy with white mould.
As the seeds were only planted two days ago I won’t know for a few days if the mould has affected the germination of the seeds.
I’ll remove the tray from the water while it’s wet outside and humid. But has anyone else had this happen?? Have the seeds germinated normally??
Ouch, once you get moulds growing the seeds are likely to damp off, eg, germinate but rot quickly. Decrease the water as soon as you can. A tea made from wormwood is supposed to be really good to prevent damping off and mould growth for seeds. I have used it, but as I don’t normally have mould problems I can’t really say that it works for certain. Good luck, hope they make it anyway!
Thanks Greth!! What a bugger!!
How did you make the wormwood tea? Just steep some leaves in boiling water til the water cools down?? I think chamomile tea is meant to be anti fungal too. I’ll give both a go, but I’ll be prepared to resow them in a week or two!
I’ve had this happen with no damping off, but the tea sounds like a good idea. I find it happens when I add blood & bone to the seedling mix.
Yep…. I’ve got blood and bone in the mix. The days after being planted it was wet and muggy too which wouldn’t help!!
Just fill a saucepan with wormwood and water, the better chopped the stronger the result. Boil for 10 minutes or so, cool and strain.
Does make the kitchen smell ‘interesting’, not hugely unpleasant, but different!
I picked some wormwood last weekend, put it into a mug and put boiling water on it, let it steep and cool, then put it into my seedling waterer. It seemed to of killed the mould. It is flat anyway. The seeds are starting to germinate *crosses fingers* The worst thing about the mould is it seems to be water repellent, so the water just slides straight off it. so I’ve made sure I water the tray underneath.
Except, I’ve just made a new tray with winter tomatoes and poppies, again with blood and bone and I noticed the mould is appearing on that too. So another mixture of wormwood tea to brew tonight… I’ll boil it properly this time though!!
