You know that old saying?
Use it up, wear it out,
Make it do or do without.
This mini challenge is to do without something. I have been been going through a process which I will be sharing shortly, but one of the things I have noticed is the large number of products this simple-living gal has in the house. Why do they keep coming in? Do I really need them? Mostly, the answer is no.
So this week, I challenge you to do without something. Choose something you usually buy and decide not to buy it ever again. You may be able to just do without completely or you may be able to make it/grow it yourself.
Please list it here for others to share and please – no blame, no shame – if someone posts something that you have done without for years, we need support, not ridicule!
What’s mine? I am going to choose something each day for a week, to make it a reall challenge. Today’s is mayonaise. I know I can make it myself, but those jars have been so convenient. No more will enter this house! Yay!

We do without so much now that I miss whole aisles at the supermarket:tup:
Will need to get my thinking cap on here and do a shopping audit maybe…….

Oh Suz, while I sit here reading this, I am eating my lunch which is full of Thomy’s mayo! I just love it and don’t think I could ever give it up!!!

Hey, Anja, Thomy’s is my favourite too. Ah well.

I normally steer clear of challenges because I expect never to complete them. :shy: Perhaps it’s time I at least give this one some thought. :confused:

Suz, I have tried countless times to give up plenty of things, tea, coffee, chocolate (caffiene!!), dairy, etc etc., and failed miserably most times. So this is what I now do and it is working; Limit my weekly shopping budget to a certain amount and spend it on home delivered food. This way I dont go to the shops and get tempted by the overwhelming environment. If I do go to the shops I take a list and only buy whats on the list usually hardgoods, cleaning products etc. I grow the rest and therefore find it special when I get a tasty tomato or watermelon. I am trying to get as seasonal and and self sufficient as I can and reduce my shopping spend to the bare minimum. I hope thats a help. Cheers porgey.November 2, 2009 at 3:58 am #441161fruitfulMember
Haven’t signed in for a long time but I was browsing and saw this challenge. I’m going to jump right in here and probably break my neck or lose my sanity.
I’m going to do without coffee and bubbly. These are my two weaknesses!!:noapprove:
I do have a clause that I will add though. I will not buy any more of these two products from the shops to consume in my house nor will I have coffee at the shops with friends BUT if I go visiting and I am offered either I will probably accept (within reason) :uhoh:.
Now I had best go and research coffee beans and how to grow them and also a home brewing kit?!?!?!

Fruitful, bubbly is a weakness of mine too but if I dont have it in my home I dont get tempted. Caffiene is the big challenge so I am cutting down slowly, on to my second cup of tea for the day – not bad considering what I used to have. Hmm… a good challenge. I guess it would be herbs for me 😆 Yep herbs are struggling here – only a bit of basil and parsley here and there, just not enough to throw together for a sauce, or such. So usually buy a bunch…
I think I will add an item every week then… So this week, no herbs.
Will think more re for the next few weeks…

It seems that these “do without and/or make it yourself”challenges always pop up when I’m entering a completely frantic stage in my working life, where time is at a premium and I’m struggling to make the regular items let alone anything more complicated!
Hrmmm what can I manage…. can I officially give up on expecting my DH to think about making dinner himself on the days when I’m working and he’s not?? :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
It’s going to have to be iced coffee. Because I truly truly don’t need to buy it when I’ve got a perfectly good fridge with milk and a perfectly good coffee machine with beans here. So right – no more iced coffees for me!November 2, 2009 at 6:52 am #441165narellehMember
fruitful – we have done the coffee thing and now have enough for our own use for the yr but visitors get other coffee.

I’m joining Suz and giving up Mayo. After reading Jamie Olivers book and realising how easy it is to make mayonaisse I vow to never buy it again.
I will also give up white rice and use brown rice exclusively from now on. Now that white rice eating DS has moved out this one will be a snap.
I also will not buy Milo, muesli bars or salami.
I made my first batch of laundry powder on the weekend and it is fantastic so I won’t be buying any more laundry powder either.

i first read this thread this morning and have been thinking all day and then it hit me!
I completely don’t NEED it so I’m giving up my relaxing glass of milo in front of the tele when the boys are down for their days sleep! 🙁 I can’t however give it up totally, so i’ll just keep having a little sprinkle on my ice cream once their asleep for the night! 😉

I’m thinking I will give up paper towels. I haven’t bought any since the last lot was used up not so long ago, and I’m thinking that with a stash of rags for floor spills, I should be able to do without. I’m getting ready to move house in just over a months time, so there are lots of things I’m doing without while I wind down my pantry, but don’t think I can give up my Miracle Whip Mayo any time soon. Then again, the new year might see me trying out some home-made mayo in my new (larger!) kitchen. Will have to look up Jamie Oliver’s recipe — he really has done alot for people being inspired to cook for themselves.
Lol there are whole supermarket aisles that I don’t go down on my regular shop too! Isn’t it a great feeling?
