So I’ve decided to try and make Wednesdays “Low-Tech Wednesdays”. I only decided to do this on Tuesday night so it wasn’t as effective as it could have been. I decided not to turn on the computer, at all. This meant I was internet-free the whole day. I also didn’t turn on the TV. I really thought about whether it was necessary to use lights, and switched them off as soon as I could. (I know I should do that anyway, but I really made an effort yesterday). Instead of plugging in S’ baby monitor, I left the hall door open a crack so that I could hear him if he cried, and I’ve done that again this morning.
At lunch, instead of watching news on TV or scanning the ‘net, I read a book I’d borrowed from the library. I did heat up my lunch in the microwave (curry I made the other day). I also listened to the radio at lunch because I needed a bit of human contact (S was in bed at that point, or I would have talked to him).
Not having distractions gave me back a lot of time. For example, because I didn’t go online after breakfast, I wrote a four-page letter to my sister while S napped – yes, the old fashioned kind, on paper, with an actual pen!! Then I took S outside and showed him how to plant lettuce (he showed me how to eat dirt :rip: ), and still had time to go to the library, go food shopping, do a load of washing, do the dishes, vacuum and make several phone calls which I’ve been meaning to do for days. Not that I want to stay offline all the time, but it did give me food for thought about how I use my time when I’m online.
Next week I thought about how I can reduce my energy/technology use further. I’ve got a thermos somewhere, which I could put boiling water in so that I can use it for hot drinks during the day instead of boiling the kettle. I could iron the clothes that need ironing maybe once or twice a week, instead of only switching it on for a couple of things. I need to wash pretty much everyday (nappies), but I’m resigned to that for now. I’m kind of looking forward to planning next week to see what else I can do to make Wednesdays a “slow” day.March 6, 2008 at 12:27 am #329603
Hey Becca – this is a great idea!March 6, 2008 at 12:29 am #329604
What a good idea becca and what a lovely day you had. Let us know how you get on next Wednesday.March 6, 2008 at 1:03 am #329605
Well done becca. :clap::clap:March 6, 2008 at 1:15 am #329606
Thats a great idea, I think I might try it as well. ALS is very helpful but it takes up sooooo much useful time. I’m going to try to only use it in the evenings when i cant be outside doing other things.
Good Job Becca :tup:March 6, 2008 at 1:40 am #329607
Hmm… I should probably give this a go too. I’m definately guilty of spending too much time online.March 6, 2008 at 2:10 am #329608
:jawdrop: Not go on the computer for the whole day…… (heart palpitations and anxiety sweat breakout!!)
Runs away screaming…………………….March 6, 2008 at 3:29 am #329609
Actually, on the weekends when the kids hog it (rotten kids!! :p ) I do get lots of things done….
A day through the week would be good also but I’m not going to promise anything just yet!! I’ve still got that problem with the ticker ya know! 😉March 6, 2008 at 3:44 am #329610
Good idea, becca. Well done.

That’s a great idea, Becca. I think I will give it a try too, although, I will make it on Thursday because I work Wednesdays and have to use the computer.March 6, 2008 at 4:53 am #329612
I love this idea Becca.
I too am guilty of wasting far too much time online or sitting in front of the box. DH actually had a bit of a dig at me on the weekend over the wasted hours.
We have agreed to cancel Foxtel in June when the contract expires so that will help with our TV obsession and I am going to limit myself to only certain hours online, just have to work out which hours they will be. I have started selling stuff on ebay so I will have to try and make all the auctions finish on the same day so I only need to check once it is over.
I look after my little gs on Wednesdays so that is a good day to make myself keep away from the electronics. Gs usually won’t have his nap unless he can here the tv on in the lounge room so I will have to wean him off it. He is pretty good for his Nanny so I don’t think it will be a problem.:D
I’m signing up for low-tech Wednesday.
Maybe we could report back next Thursday and see how we went?March 6, 2008 at 7:43 am #329613
Sounds good, I’m up for it (and it’s always a good thing to have someone else you’re accountable to, other than yourself!!) Michelle, do you know you can suspend your Foxtel subscription for up to three months for a cost of $5 per month? I plan to do that sometime before the baby comes, probably within the next month or two, and then will get it back in time for the last weeks when I get huge and can’t sleep at night (my FAVOURITE bit of the pregnancy  ) I just rang the other day and we still have about 1 year left on our contract… not sure we’ll both renewing it.
Chezza, these things aren’t to be entered into lightly. The last thing I would want is for it to affect your health 😆
Seriously, though – it did take some willpower! I was surprised how often I thought, “ooh, I’ll just check that online” or “I’ll just see what the weather will be like on the weekend” – stuff I can so do without knowing right this minute!! Forced me to consider how to occupy myself by actually DOING something rather than sitting passively by. Thanks all for your positive comments 🙂March 6, 2008 at 8:12 am #329614
what a great idea. I can do this really easily. cook on the bbq instead, no lights do that any way. Fans still need them or i bake. I have a radio that runs on batteries and it last for about 4 months. I carry it around the yard. Especially for jobs like rosella picking. No TV ummmmmmmmm Ok but you are twisting my arm. Now what day will i chose Yes tuesday sounds like a good day for me.
OHHHHHH guess what i got DH to turn the TV off at the wall. :metal: That is big here as the TV is his area.March 6, 2008 at 8:25 am #329615
 great idea. I turn off my computer every time after using it, have limited the time on computer and don’t watch much tv especially during the day. It’s amazing what time the computer/tv takes up and it’s a good idea to break away from the habit to realise and enjoy other things (like reading, craft, smelling the roses etc.).
This is an inspirational thread :clap:March 6, 2008 at 8:42 am #329616

Well said Eucalypt!
I haven’t renewed my bigpond internet contract as I am planning on moving. Therfore am paying a month by month rate of $69 a month for 10GB 😐 which is a bit expensive but I don’t want to get into a contract. I am now considering going cold turkey and perhaps when I finally move renewing a contract BUT on a VERY LIMITED or reduced internet time. I am even considering not having internet connection perhaps for a few months;) only considering that possibility!
