Have been thinking a bit about this thread off and on and pondering the idea of ‘commitment’. I too have often said the ‘If I had more money I would do blah blah blah and then I would be more committed, greener, more self sufficient etc etc etc. At the same time this statement has always worried me as spending more money seems to be the opposite of the whole concept of sustainability and self sufficiency (have a read of the book ‘Affluenza’ ). I was reading an article this morning and the statement right at the end of it suddenly brought everything home to me (thank you Jerry Coleby Williams) It said (paraphrased) ‘sustainability is the art of living within limits’. The amount of money I have is a limit I need to live within and if I can’t afford fancy gadgets to make me ‘greener’ then so be it. I need to work with what I have. Part of my commitment is to work with what I have and not spend heaps of money. As he also said “take small, affordable and manageable steps that you can guarantee to carry out” My new years resolution I think will be to stop wishing for a lotto win and lamenting that I can’t afford to do things and start looking around a bit more to find ways to do things with what I have available to me.
Sounds like a great New Years resolution Espinay!
Espinay that is a truly profound statement. Thank you for sharing. It’s puts so much of what we do in perspective.
