Sounds like the girth or saddle may be irritating her to me – if she’s stretching like the foal in the first picture then they sometimes do that to help them relieve irritation. Have a prod around the girth area and see if she responds in any way – it isn’t always obvious just by looking and feeling but if she’s edgy in any way when you feel around it might be sign that something is pressing or rubbing uncomfortably. If you can’t trace anything to the girth, see if you can have a look under the saddle. Prod around a bit, see if there’s any dry patches on an otherwise sweaty back. Try taking the saddle off completely between rides and see if the behaviour stops.
Crossing the legs going uphill is a new one on me – my old pony used to do it downhill. Can’t see the girth influencing this one, but possibly the saddle?
crossing her legs up hill sounds like she’s tired!
I reckon she has muscle issues.. try a massuse.
Seriously, I know someone who does the bowen technique for horses.
Sorry it has taken so long to get back. From what I have been reading they are now pretty sure it is a pinched/trapped nerve and the horse is being treated. Thanks for the replies everyone.
That’s great news Daviesgang, thanks for letting us know :D:tup:
I would recommend you try an equine myofunctional threapist as she could have a muscle problem across the back and is doing the stretches to try and release it. A good EMT can give you some idea of what is going on in the body and definately worth it. I use one for my boy periodically with excellent results.
