Ok I’ll bite What is it ? and what is it used for ?:confused:April 25, 2010 at 3:06 am #461542
I have seen people make their own on youtube but I wasn’t sure if it could be done well here. It will be good to see/hear the results.
Is it much cheaper than buying it pre done?April 25, 2010 at 3:38 am #461543
It’s used as a cover each time kitchen scraps are added in a Bokashi indoors compost maker.
Cost so far
6kg bran ( for local stock feed) $8
EM1 $39 that’s with postage foe 1 lt for my first batch I only needed 30ml so it will go a long way
Molasses $3 from Coles same as the EM 1 will go on for ever
Rock salt can’t remember ..but it wasn’t much.
I will work out haw b many bags I get and the unit cost ColApril 25, 2010 at 4:50 am #461544
It looks to be about 1/3 of the price to make it yourself. Going by the prices you said it’s about $10 for 8kgs give or take however much the Molasses and salt costs. To buy 6kg of it already done is about $30/$40 + p+h.
Looks like the way to go is make it yourself.April 25, 2010 at 5:40 am #461545
1/3 may be a less .. so little of the EM1 is used I wonder if it’s enough did check the amount at three different sites that had info on making your own and all came about the same amount.. so finger crossed. ColApril 25, 2010 at 9:47 am #461546

I understand the principle but have never seen a boskashi bucket.
Are you using an original bucket or one you have put together. If your own is it just a straight lidded bucket or is there a bottom chamber for the liquid to collect in and be drained off or do you not bother about draining off the liquid.May 19, 2010 at 12:14 am #461551
Hi cbear I use the original bucket but will be making another one soon from a couple of 20l tubs .. the liquid must be drained off each day.. so a double bucket set-up is the go! ColMay 19, 2010 at 3:22 am #461552
Tap in the bottom bucket and heaps of small holes in the top one I take itSeptember 6, 2010 at 10:54 pm #461553
Just wondering on your results Urban wombat??????September 17, 2011 at 2:03 pm #461554
U-W how are you going with the home-made Bokashi bran??
I have a friend who wants to do a compost pile but there is only her and DH so I mentioned the Bokashi system, and mentioned it can be expensive to set up but once working is quite good.
So if your home-made system is working then she can also cut costs if she wants to go that way.
She only has a small garden mainly with natives, grevillias mainly so will the end result be ok for those plants???
BTW the pics you posted arent there so can you put them back up ??
