Hello, just thought I’d introduce myself. I stumbled across this site a couple of nights ago while looking for chicken coop plans.
Hubby and I recently bought our first home and are just staring to build the infrastructure for our new lifestyle. Right now we’re starting out with a vegi patch and chicken coop.
This is a really exciting time while we plan and design our nest. I grew up with both sets of grandparents being self supporting (not quite sufficient) and have been hanging out for my chance to build a similar lifestyle. I guess it’s an odd sort of circle, the lifestyle they developed out of necessity has become the lifestyle we aim for.
My Nona and Nonno had a 1/4 acre in perth that provided all of their fruit, vegi, eggs, chicken meat, rabbit meat, pigeon meat (with the aide of a trap made from an old spring bed frame) and the magical (to an 8 year old) luffa. Gran and Tom lived on a small farm with the whole range of animals, fruit and veg. Gran spun and dyed her own sheep and goat wool and made the whole range of preserves.
If we can manage half of that I’ll be more than happy!

Welcome Ashley – this site has been an inspiration for me – we gave up our jobs and moved to 20 acres out of york 12 months ago and haven’t looked back – hope it is just a good for you.

Welcome to ALS. Nice to see another West Aussie here.
We moved from Karrinyup down to Albany last year and have almost got the vegie garden and chook mahal finished.

G’day Ashley & welcome. :wave:October 30, 2008 at 9:16 pm #376651Jimmy1Member
Hi Ashley, you will have no regrets, it’s good to see you starting out in life following this path. Wish I had the common sense to do it when I was starting out in married life.
We are in the South West near Capel grow veggies, keep chooks and try to avoid food mileage and supermarkets where possible.
I doubt if anyone will become totally self suffiecent but even getting part of the way is good.
I have learned a lot from this site including making own laundry detergent, there is a couple of good chook sites also that may assist.
Good luck JimOctober 30, 2008 at 9:23 pm #376652baringaparkMember

My partner & I have a 9 1/2 acre block outside Midland. We often have freshly hatched or other extra poultry, when you’re ready to stock your coop. We also have a goodly portion of various seeds & seedlings, if you are interested. Just send me a pm.
Good luck with your new ventures!October 31, 2008 at 3:26 am #376657ErthgirlMember
Welcome, your place sounds fantastic…can’t wait to hear of your progress with your vegies and chookens.
We’re in White Gum Valley near Freo…doing the vegie, chook, sustainability thing.
And hi Chookchick…might PM you myself a little later re: some chookens if that’s OK?? We have 3 layers and 6 little chickens…but it’s looking like 4 roos and 2 girls out of the chickens…so will be in the market for a couple more girls down the track.
Catch you both around the site.

Hi Ashley, welcome! My grandparents had a house in Lesmurdie, it’s always been a favourite place of mine  We’re having a get-together tomorrow and hope to have some more soon, so hopefully you’ll be able to catch up with some of us West-Aussies IRL at some stage!
