Hi! My name is Drew. I recently moved to the Redlands Bay area from Ipswich via the Gold Coast. I am a keen gardener, fisherman and hunter. I enjoy doing things the hard way, because I think it tastes better that way. I am beginning to smoke and preserve my own wild caught meats, with some bacon curing at the moment. I enjoy foraging and I am a massive fan of Les Hiddins, the Bush Tucker Man.
I would like to try and promote native foods to Australians, some of which have gourmet value, like the fingerlime and the desert lime.
I am really starting to dislike today’s “throw-away” culture and the attitude of today’s kids when you try and get them involved in the natural things, like Gardening and Fishing…
Anyway, I have my small plot in Mt.Cotton and I’m doing pretty well out of it. My parents have 30 odd acres out at Tara, QLD and I’m keen to put it to good use. I’ve been looking at capers, desert limes, or native raspberries but would really like any suggestions. Thanks

Hi Drew, Welcome to ALS. I was born in Wynnum-Manly and spent a lot of time at Redland Bay with much of my working career at Pine Lodge Equestrian Park in your area. We now live in Tasmania and I am also interested in native foods. Good luck with your enterprise and hope to catch up in the forums.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes!
I am pretty keen to get stuck in on the natives food front, but not looking to do it commercially, more so to benefit my friends and family and generate some interest among the community.
I was just wondering, if anyone on here would be interested in some trades/bartering if you are from the Brisbane/SEQ area? Just to generate some interest for the moment, but I am about to come into ALOT of large freshwater Redclaw crayfish, that I legally cannot release or stock in my little dam. I can vouch for thier tastiness. If anyone would be interested initially, please let me know.
Also, I’m interested in holding a cook-off competition with a twist. Just at a local park or my place. I’m looking for Brisbanes best bacon recipe! Just, once again, looking to generate some interest. I was thinking 4 categories. Breakfast, traditional and gourmet and smoked. Bacon is easy to cure and there are literally thousands of recipes, procudures and proccesses out there. Perhaps a few Kg of redclaw could be a good prize??
