Does anyone know anything about domes, does anyone live in a dome, has anyone built one and got it thru council approval (most importantly)?
I’ve got a 1/4 acre town block in an outback country town and can’t get a builder. Found this place on the web:
My main concern is to have enough windows to let the sunlight in, and being able to add a verandah since up here we tend to live outside most of the time, and it rains a lot.
Wondering if it’s feasible and whether battles with council are likely to ensue. Would love some feedback, suggestions, stories, pix – any input will do. All replies will be appreciated.August 8, 2011 at 12:07 am #503921
I remember looking at geodesic domes once (I was looking for an alternate way to make a chook dome) and I found some interesting sites.
A couple of links I found are:August 8, 2011 at 1:08 am #503922
I studied a bit about domes at one time, particularly earth bag building which have a lot of designs around domes. There have been quite a lot built now so might be worth checking out. If you search earth bag building a number of sites will come up.

Like the look of the Kwickset Bungalows. Being a single older female I will have to borrow other people’s husbands, so the simpler and quicker the construction the better. :laugh:August 8, 2011 at 10:52 am #503924
There used to be one at Clifton Beach (Cairns) back in the 80’s when I was teenager. I wonder if it is still there. My school principle lived in it.
From the pictures it would needs lots more windows or it would be very hot in summer at Chillego. Having to have the aircon all the time would defeat the purpose.
The other thing you want to consider is what cyclone rating you would need. I know you don’t cop the full brunt of them like we do on the coast but it would probably need to withstand a lot of wind nontheless.August 8, 2011 at 1:13 pm #503925
Next time I’m in Cairns I might nick up there and cruise the streets, see if I can find it, thanks.August 8, 2011 at 3:50 pm #503926
Hey there sunbird 🙂
Are these the sort of domes you are talking about?
I believe there are several Aussie companies (google) – can’t think of the one providing owner-builder workshops off the top of my head. Will add it later when I do.
And yes, they are fantastic.
There are a few about, so, Council approval has been granted previously.

We also looked at these and went so far as having the plans drawn up but the block of land fell through and we moved north. If they are built right i think they would circulate the air well and you wouldn’t need much aircon, if at all. They have a fantastic history of standing up in fires and cyclones.
There are a few in Townsville too. 🙂August 8, 2011 at 6:00 pm #503928
I love the idea of earthen domes, esp the sandbag ones. I’m just on a town block and like all other building materials, earth would have to be transported too.
The modular types would be the way to go, and I’m hoping someone will come out of the woodwork who has gone down this path. I priced the ones in my link a couple years back and it seemed a reasonable way to go, but wondering what experiences people have had with local councils in getting approvals.
