Well i have given up on looking for silkies and pekins, and have found a breeder of the Belgium bantams, they are said to be a very friendly chook, and look very funny.
if anyone knows about the breed or who has them i would love some info.
I am picking up 2 chicks this week, I can’t wait! :D:):lol::tongue::clap::tup:March 25, 2008 at 11:58 am #332185
Nice little bantam. Tames nicely. Hens will go broody if you let them. Coming back in to popularity. I was looking for some several years ago and breeders were few and far between……I ended up with Pekins instead. Seems to be quite a few breeders of them around now. Congratulations and all the best with them!March 25, 2008 at 12:28 pm #332186
Good luck, Angus! I will be asking advice soon – I have a coop (of sorts) – just need to address the fox issue.

Angus, one of my best friend in the Dandenong Ranges breeds Barbu D’Anvers Belgian Bantams (Quail) http://www.dtbcentre.co.uk/bantam_belgians.htm . She has some for sale if you are interested. PM me your details if you’d like me to follow it up for you.
Also, my poultry club (Mountain District) is holding a Poultry Auction at Yarra Glen Showgrounds on the 29th of March. You might find something suitable there. Quite a lot of our members breed Pekins and there are usually quite a lot of surplus stock for sale at our auctions, especially at this time of the year being the end of the breeding season.March 25, 2008 at 12:56 pm #332188
Sorry, just noticed that you have in fact found a breeder. :geek: In case anyone’s interested, I have Silkies and know quite a few other breeders!!! :tup:March 26, 2008 at 8:01 am #332189
Sorry, no advice here, but just wanted to say that’s great news, glad you’ve found some chookies, even if they’re not the breed you’re after.. 🙂
I ended up finding some pekin x frizzles locally, which i’m really really happy about. 1 is black frizzle & the other is buff straight feathered (but sisters). They’re only about 7 or 8wks old, so perfect age for relocation to a new home & to be tamed a little bit. Really excited, have started making a chook tractor for them for my parents’ garden.. 😀 😀March 26, 2008 at 8:11 am #332190
I thought Belgium Bantams were just well dressed ordinary bantams that spoke French :geek:
Silly me 😀

Hi – I am a member of the Belgium Bantam Club and at the moment have White D’Uccle’s although my favourite are Millefluer D’Uccle. Anyway, they are great little bantams, really love people and are so funny. I have them simply because I like them and they are on the rare breed list so I always think that is important. Anyway, good luck.March 30, 2008 at 5:27 am #332192
Well,i’m loving my little chookies, bloody dags they are!
Poppy and Lucy are fitting right in with the family. They are so friendly and silly, one is 5 weeks and the other is eight weeks, and they look after each. I can’t wait to see the amazing colours they will be when they are older,I’am so glad i went with the belgiums rather than the silkies or bantams, although i do like them as well.
I recommend them to anyone who wants a little friendly chook.
Thanks peoples :tup:March 30, 2008 at 12:33 pm #332193
Congratulations and welcome to the fabulous world of Belgians. I am also a member of the Belg club Aust. Which type did you get??? D’Uccle,D’Anver or D’Watermael?
I currently have D’Uccle but will be obtaining some D’Watermael at the 25th Anniversary show in June.
My Fav colour/s would have to be Porcelaine and Cream but I oly have Blacl,Black Mottled,Splash and Lavendar.
The D’Uccle is prob the calmest of the 3 types and with their feathered feet won’t plow up your garden as much as the other 2 types. I have also found some colours to be calmer than others, which is a really interesting thought considering the type is the same so only the colour gene is different so hard to explain the behaviour placidity in some colours as opposed to others……………hmmmm!March 30, 2008 at 8:50 pm #332194
angusK, glad you are enjoying your little bantams. They really are great aren’t they. If anyone is interested I have two spare white D’Uccle cockerels just about to crow stage. Cute little fellas.
sebzpets good to meet another member of the club here.April 4, 2008 at 8:43 pm #332195
Now if you had a pullet or hen to go with 1 of those boys I’d interested………not sure where I would put them but with more pens being built next weekend it wouldn’t be a prob for long :metal:.
Might be worth letting Irene know you have them as she may know of someone interested.April 6, 2008 at 5:45 am #332196

sebzpets, can anyone go to the show in June? I’d love to have a look. I’d like to get some bantams and these sound like such friendly little things. In our home everyone is a pet so the friendlier the better.
