Cuttle fish for chookens?

While on holidays, I found lots of lovely cuttle fish bones. Are these any good for my chookens? And if so, should I crush them or give them whole??
A friend bought some back from the coast for us and our chooks devoured them. They got them whole and just pecked away what they wanted until they were all gone (which didnt take very long)
Weaver, did you wash them to remove the salt? I’m just wondering if the salt would deter or attract the chooks.
They would provide a good supply of calcium and to some degree, salt, but not a lot of digestive help in the crop. I think the texture is too fine. Hence I stick to shell grit. They’ll peck them to bits, unlike the parrots that gnaw on them to sharpen their beaks..
Drill a hole in one end with a sharp knife, not hard to do, and hang it up in their pen. Gives them something to play with as well as providing calcium for their egg shells.
I just throw them in the pen or around the trees on the mulch and chookies help themselves when they want them – any crumbs then help the trees
Kippen I had every intention of washing the salt off but left them in a plastic bag on the back verandah ready to do and the chooks found them and had them all over the place before I got to rinse them off so it certainly didnt deter them.
My chooks love them. I just throw it in the pen and its gone in a couple of days. The salt is fine for them.:metal:
Granddaughter brings lots home when we go down the beach. seaweed as well.
I just crush them up roughly and mix with their feed – if they don’t have them for a while the egg shells start to get thin 😀
ooh we did too Anja – snap! 😆 Which beach did ya’ll go to?
We were at Philliip Island E, a long way from you 🙁
just saw the pics…love the bath
It was the most luxurious place I’ve ever seen E. I felt like I was living in an Imperial Leather add!
