Just wondering if anyone has built a cob house and what issues they may have had with councils etc. I plan on building a cob house with a sod roof. I anticipate a lot of strange looks and a reasonable amount of opposition. has anyone else tried this?
Sorry I can’t help you with this, but my advice would be to be as prepared as you possibly can when you speak to your local council about it. I know there are some things they simply turn down flat, but the more info and ammunition you have the better. There’s a facebook page for cob houses, but it looks like mostly UK / European homes are on there. You could always post a message there looking for other Aussies. They are gorgeous homes, my dream is an earthship but this is definitely second choice!
Good luck with your plans!
A standard way of getting around councils and the structural requirements, which you’ll find is how they get around mud-brick & strawbale construction ( not all but most) is to build “post & beam”, so the walls are merely in-fill, and not a structural concern.
I’ve built with “light earth” which is stud walls filled with cob between the noggings. Its only 20% volume of typical cob; honestly, unless you’re putting on weekend workingbees or access to free labour, its an enormously overwhelming exercise.
Try building a garden-shed first before you even start worrying about councils!
