Hi there, am looking for a supplier of hen eggs that I can incubate myself as a hobby. Currently living in North Queensland and chooks up here in price is ridiculous. Would like to start incubating my own eggs. Wanting a supplier willing to post.
You may find a local facebook page that sells eggs?? Might have a better success rate of hatching 🙂
There are a few facebook pages plus farmstockonline that sell eggs. I have found that when I have bought eggs
and had them posted the combination of rough postal workers plus just the travel of the egss reduces the hatch
rate to very very low levels. In my experience less the 20%. You are better off trying to travel a couple of
hours around your local area and pick up eggs. at least then you can see the parents. another option is to
go to you local farmers markets and quietly ask the sellers if their eggs may be fertile and what breeds they
have. Be discreet as some people take great offence to buying fertilised eggs and the sellers may want this
info kept quiet. I have got a few good breed over the years like this
I would suggest you join the Backyard Poultry forum. I have mine sent up in the post from Victoria and have a very high success rate. The members of the BYP forum are mostly breeding show quality birds so you should get good purebred hooks.
No – incubators and brooder boxes are cruel; but if you had a broody hen to hat h and raise them I’d ve more than happy to supply fertile eggs.
Thank you all for your thoughtful replies. They were most helpful. Ediedioh I appreciate your view however will have to disagree. In my experience I don’t see it as cruel. My hand raised chicks grow up tame and make great pets that happily come up and spend time with us. I have a photo of one sitting on my mothers hat as a young adult as she felt that was a happy place to perch. I don’t see. That as cruel just a happy friendly domesticated bird 😉
