Hi All ALS’s
most new members might not know me and older members may not remember me but I am back.
I just wanted to let everyone know that I am starting a Backyard produce swap group in the Adelaide Hills.
This is for people who live in the area to get together to swap excess produce from their fruit trees, veggie beds, including herbs, seeds, bottled produce or anything relating to backyard food.
Please let me know if you are interested in joining in. We are looking to start up in the Spring and I am just mustering as much interest as possible at the moment to be able to organise a suitable location central for everyone and we can discuss frequency of meets.
It will be a casual affair so no membership required just lots of fun to swap food, meet like minded growers and get hints and tips, advice etc on growing backyard food.
Cheers CindyJune 16, 2012 at 4:24 pm #524955Bandicoot ValleyMember
Funny you should say that, I’m involved in 4 community gardens & was also speaking to a restauranteur friend of mine last night about using her Stirling restaurant for starting up a swap – exactly what you’re talking about! There is a group called Blackwood Urban Orchard who do a swap twice a month in Blackwood. What part of the hills are you in? Perhaps we should band together?June 16, 2012 at 6:34 pm #524956
Hi Cindy and welcome back. Are you still at Mount Barker? I remember when you moved there a little while back…. we’re still plains dwellers dreaming of a move to the hills. One day… Good luck with your swap – what a great idea :clap:June 16, 2012 at 8:02 pm #524957
Hi Bandicoot valley
I am at Mount Barker.
Would love to keep in touch to work on this project.June 16, 2012 at 8:03 pm #524958
Yes Im still at Mount Barker, and loving living here in the hills, great to see a familiar Cyber face on here. How have you been?June 16, 2012 at 10:06 pm #524959RavykMember
I’d be interested too! I’m in Flagstaff Hill.
BV, can you send me the details about the Blackwood swap? I’d be interested in going along, as would one of my friends I think.June 17, 2012 at 3:41 am #524960MiaowzenMember
That sounds so neat! Does anyone know of one in the north? I’m in Salisbury and DH bought a V8 so it would blow my week’s fuel budget driving to the hills :pinch:June 17, 2012 at 2:08 pm #524961

Yeah, good thanks Cindy. Working more than I would like and gardening less than I would like. Unfortunately if we moved to the hills now, the drive to/from work each day would make it even worse. Not that it stops us looking. I can see moving in a few years, before the kids start high school and it makes too hard to uproot them. I remember when you posted plans for your block – I think they may have involved pigs? Have you got animals on your block now?June 17, 2012 at 2:14 pm #524962

Hi Miaowzen. My name is Bel and my DH also bought a V8. Mind you, he catches the bus or rides his bike to work, and when he needs a car on the weekend, he uses mine!! God forbid if he took his car out of the garage, it might get rained on and he would have to spend the day polishing it again 👿 I’m wondering if it’s not just a big ornament?!
You’re not far from me Miaowzen. Mudhen also lives near me. Fruitful, fruitloopz, RachE and Vanessa aren’t too far from you either. Even if we can’t organise something formal, there are probably enough of us to share produce/plants/seeds etc when we have spare. I’ve just given away a heap of raspberry/boysenberry/strawberry plants. Unfortunately I don’t have much growing at the moment, but spring/summer is always a good time for me in the garden.June 17, 2012 at 2:21 pm #524963MiaowzenMember
Oh haha! Yes DH commutes by motorbike and left me to drive the V8!!! Occasional informal catchups to share plants and things would be awesome 🙂 I’ve just made up a big batch of soap too.June 17, 2012 at 2:23 pm #524964

Ooooh, i love handmade soap. Fruitful taught me how to make it last year, and I haven’t made any since  I’d love to swap something for some soap.June 17, 2012 at 8:43 pm #524965

Urban Orchard food swap on the 1st & 3rd Sunday each month in Blackwood. On the 3rd Sunday of the month it’s at the Artisan Cafe behind Bendigo Bank on Main Rd, between 4:30 – 5:30pm; and on the 1st Sunday of the month (next one: 1st July) it’s going to be at the Blackwood Market on Coromandel Pde, between 10 – 11am.June 17, 2012 at 8:49 pm #524966

We started out with breeding chickens and Muscavoy Ducks and soon discoved that we just could not slaughter and eat the animals we raised. So we decided to become vegetarian and did away with the ducks and just have chickens for eggs.
I have planted a lovely big orchard which the chooks enjoy.June 17, 2012 at 9:10 pm #524968VanessaMember
Yes I am out your way.
In the interest of not hijacking this thread any more I’ll start up another thread for us northerners
