We are looking at getting a 2kW PV sytem installed. I have contacted several companies and the product seems comparible, with similar warranties etc. The prices vary a bit. The unknown element is the service both before and after installation.

At the moment the best quote is from Nicholls Group/Nicholls Solar. Has anyone dealt with them and found them good (or not?)

Are there any other companies you can recommend?

First off where are you, no use recommending Queensland if you are not living here. As well most will only install in a certain area so you have to maily source from those who will service your area.
The ONLY stupid question is the ONE NOT asked.

Could you afford to put a 3Kw inverter in for future expansion.

What is the rate in NSW and is it a gross or net feed in tariff.

Qld is 44 cents net in to the grid with AGL (supplier) now adding 8 cents so we are getting 52 cents net to the grid.

Congratulation on going ahead.

The NSW Parliament just passed the Solar Bonus Scheme which will begin Jan 2010- 60c gross feed in tariff!!
The gross feed in tariff makes all the differnce- we looked a solar a little while ago but couldnt really afford it. With the gross feed in tariff set at 60c our system will pay for itself in four years.
And we will be funding it with a Government Green Loan which is interest free.

Nlac, do you know any details about the proposed gross feed in tariff? Does everybody get it, or only new solar installations?

Gothic mum, we used Andy Colvin Solar, he lives at Elands, I think, out from Taree a bit.

They should not differ between existing and new, check with your local member.

This will mean that NSW and the ACT are the only one's offering a gross feed in tariff I believe.

Tried to get the green loan to upgrade my system but it did not come up.

KD the GFiT will be for exisitng grid feed systems as well as new installations. The scheme is set to start 1 Jan 2010, but theres a 6 month changeover period depending on who your electricity supplier is.

The scheme will be reviewed when there is a total of 50 megawatts in capacity of pv systems installed and receiving the feed in tariff- which I understand to mean that perhaps new systems installed after this might not be able to get the gross feed in tariff- or at least it seems the govt is keeping their options open to do that with the review clause.

The scheme is set to run for seven years.

You can read the whole legislation at

Ok - I know nothing about solar, but as we have a small house (about 10sq) and a $500 electricity bill every quarter, I am interested.

But funds are really tight atm - is it possible to still put in a solar power system which will cover our energy needs on such limited funds?
